So I got me a Savage MKII .22LR and tweaked it...

Anyone here have one of these? It is a Savage MKII .22LR bolt action rifle with a detachable magazine and a synthetic stock.

I couldn't resist for $99 and I didn't have a plinking .22 rifle, so I got it. Luckily my brother-in-law paid me $120 to replace his oil pan so I had the money with me for an impulse buy :) I was excited, it looked nice to me.

However, when I got it home and started pretending to use it, I found some annoyances.

First of all, the magazine has sharp metal edges that dig into your front hand where you are gripping the forend, if you are unlucky enough to let your grip slide too far back. I got into my stuff pile and pulled out some 1/16" thick rubber glue-backed heat-shrink tubing that fit around the magazine... A few minutes with a razor blade and a heat gun, and the magazine was covered in nice rubber. No more ouchies on my hand!

Second thing that bugged me was the trigger. Sharp uncomfortable corners on the top and bottom and uncomfortable edges on the side. I knew I would not want to shoot this gun for long if I didn't do something. So I stripped it down and took the hand files to it and some sandpaper and later, the polishing wheel. Rounded the corners and polished it, now the trigger is comfortable.

Last major annoyance was the mold marks, you know, the plastic ridges where the mold pieces meet when they cast the plastic stock. There were mold marks on the fore-end and back on the grip too and they were uncomfortable on my hands. So, I sanded them out. However, as you may know, this left rough lighter gray areas where I sanded, which didn't match the slick shiny looking plastic on the rest of the stock. So I decided to get out the torch and try flame-polishing them out. It worked! Slick and shiny, you can't even tell I sanded the plastic anywhere.

Now when I hold the gun it feels good in my hands and I think I will be able shoot a $9 box of 500 shells through it like I wanted to :) I was rather proud of myself.

I like this gun but AFTER the stuff I did to it. Without my little tweaks it was kind of annoying.

I just wanted to see if any of you guys had this gun, what you thought about it, if anyone did the same type of modifications to theirs, etc.

I got one for my brother at wally world as a working hunting and plinking gun. Seems to get good accuracy, highest cap mags I've had are 10 rounds each. Can't complain too much for the price, other than similar to what you mentioned. But hey, it was 100 bucks only!
