Anyone have a resource or something that shows takedown or disassembly of the Savage 10/12 bolt?

Just got a 12FV and the bolt looks like the nut on the back of the bolt takes it down, but it's either on there with the worst deathgrip ever, or I'm doing something out of order.

I called the supposedly great Savage customer service people, who chided me for attempting to disassemble my rife's bolt.:rolleyes: They said only a gunsmith should ever disassemble the bolt. I asked the smarmy girl on the help line if the gunsmith should shoot it and clean it for me too. She said no, I could do that. What a joke.

Anyway, if anyone knows how-to I'd be mighty appreciative. This new FV is light striking primers and I need to see what's up, whether it's a sticking pin or something in the FP channel.

the nut at the back of the bolt (no not you) just removes the bolt handle. i was looking at dis-assembling the bolt out of curiosity too.

i don't recall if it had bolt dis-assemble info, but the rifle gunsmithing book (at borders or B&N) might have the info.

I got it. It just took insane amount of torque to get that nut off. Simple disassembly, I was just afraid I was wrenching down on something that was locked, but apparently not.

Got the FP polished, the gun shoots like a dream now!

So no light strikes? Was there obvious indication of burrs on the FP or something, or did you just give the whole thing a once-over for good measure? How many rounds did you shoot?

It wasn't overtly burred, but the FP and the channel were a little rough. With the spring out of the bolt body, the FP would kind of stick a bit if you shook the bolt back and forth, after the polishing it moves freely and easily....so I think the roughness of the metal was doing it.

I've only shot 20 rounds after my fix, but one in every 3 rounds before were light striking, with a lot of variation. All 20 went perfect after, and all primer dents were consistent.

I'll give it a more thorough workout this weekend when I have some time, but I'm reasonably confident I've found the problem.
