What do you guys think of this game? How realistic is the gun simulation? I'm interested to hear opinions of this game from the shooter's world rather than the computer geek's world :)

All of my computer geek friends (10 of them or so) love this game and we play it often. However, I am the only shooter among this group. The rest of these geeks don't even like guns.

As far as a simulation? Not even remotely close. As far as gameplay? eh.. not worth putting up with the folks who play it, used to play the original CS a lot for about two months straight, then I had enough of it. Too much cheating, too many idiots, and too much waiting around rather than playing.

I've got Half-Life 2, haven't tried source. To keep this from being closed, how bout some gun commentary: the pump action shotgun and .357 magnum rule, like before.

Counter-Strike was cool in like 1999. I've heard Source just has updated graphics and a few new maps. Disappointing.

For realistic guns and gunplay I have not seen anything better than America's Army. And it is a free download. I played it for a bit, quit when I saw too many people cheating. There may be better policing software now though.

Its the same game,Terrorist jump sideway one handed head shot at 75m with AK-47 ,but with better graphics.

CS is a good game strictly speaking for the entertainment value. It's addictive, and it looks like most of the problems with cheating has been solved. That was the reason I stopped playing the original. If you guys want a good group of folks to game with, or just to get more info on the games out there, click the link in my sig line. :)

too many cheaters and hackers there at CS.day of defeat was a good mod setting more in ww2.not as many cheaters there.half-life, the original one that started cs as a mod,was fun but people found ways to cheat there as well.

dial up just doesnt cut it on those games anyways,I think CS one has to have high speed.

It's about as realistic as running at a full sprint while looking through the scope on your Remington 700 and not tripping on something and falling and breaking your neck.

I got hooked on 1.5 at work. Stopped playing before the next version came out. recently bought source now I'm hooked on it again. Fun addicting game. To me realism is a very small part of what makes a game or movie entertaining.

Physics is really good. Think visible dust particles and cans flying when you shoot them. Graphics are good. But underneath, it is still dominated by 12 yr old l337-speakers who think cheating is OK because they don't enjoy the game in it original form. BTW, unless you get on a good server closed off to the public, it is still pretty much a spray and pray game.

Can't wait for DOD source, though. Less cheaters, punks and annoying brats. Plus it is WWII, an automatic plus.

CS is a fun game... though it has its problems. I've been on both sides of the cheating problem.

Main problems with CS is:

voice communication: one of the worst things they did... some people just don't shut up...

Cheating

and other things

But as for the weapons:

Not realistic as far as hit probability...
When you get shot... you should get pushed a bit if your being shot in the back... pushed back if shot from the front... etc...

The Bolts are on the wrong side of the gun (kindof like a righty using a lefty gun)

But the pump shotgun.... its a Freaking BENELLI M3!!! The bolt is definately a semi bolt... should have made it a rem 870 or something. or at least let you switch to semi-auto

Over all.. the game is fun.. but mainly depends on who you play with. Physics are much better in CS: Source. Thats because of the HL2 engine.

It's OK. Honestly not the worst 'approximation' out there. Not the best either. At least you can shoot through light cover, etc. And you can't run as fast with a scoped rifle as you can with a handgun.

I do like how 4 hits COM with 5.56mm will just 'lower your health' a bit.

Ehh, it's a game, fun, but still a game. I liked CSS from what little I've seen of it, for some reason my computer likes to crash about 5 minutes into the game, dunno what's causing it.

The other FPS game I'm playing these days is America's Army (http://www.americasarmy.com). Designed and developed by the US Army as a recruiting tool, so it's very realistic, and it's completely free.

"The Bolts are on the wrong side of the gun (kindof like a righty using a lefty gun)"

I don't understand why they didn't completely overhaul the weapons in CS:Source. In the original the models fired left-handed only until Beta 5.0 or 6.0. This was undoubtedly because it is generally easier for a right-handed artist to draw or model a left-handed figure. When they figured out how to mirror animations they ended up with mirrored right-handed guns (so they look like left-handed guns when you select right-handed model).

So far, this thread is related only to the imaginary use of imaginary guns. How about some real guns in it, so that I don't have to close it as OT?

dial up just doesnt cut it on those games anyways,I think CS one has to have high speed. Not true. All Valve games run great on dial-up, except the HL2 deathmatch, due to all the physics info that has to be sent back and forth.

America's Army on the other hand, has about the worst netcode I've ever seen in my life. I wouldn't bother if you have dial-up.

Are there any new guns, or the same stuff?

And are they still all left-handed models?

I tried playing CS:S a few times but lost interest immediately. I'm a tornado of death-dealing mayhem in HL2 DM, and after I got my hotkeys set up correctly there weren't many people that would top me on a server. DM is all about reflex, movement, and aiming. CS:S is all about learning the squeeze points in a map.

The weapons are not realistic at all. As stated above, several rifle shots to the chest may not kill you, but a shot with the AWP in the arm will drop you instantly. It is cool that FA fire causes your groups to enlarge, while squatting helps accuracy. Does it teach you good handling skills? HA! Well, maybe you learn to pie corners, but that's about it.

If I'm gonna play something that's obviously not realistic, it's gonna be DM...no waiting for the match to restart after you die, quicker action, more tense, just more fun in general. For me anyway. If ever you guys see Darth Honkey while playing DM, drop me a message - maybe I'll kill you last :D

I've heard the reason for the left-side ejection ports is that artists are artists. If you put it on the right side, there is nothing to show, becauseyou can't see it off the edge of the screen.

To keep it with real guns, after playing CS, I though the MP5 was my favorite. When I shot in real life, the MAC-10 held a much higher appeal to me than the MP5 did.

I hate the new CS Source, so I still stick with the original CS.

I'm always the one awping in my group, and zooming in with the AWP is so slow. I cant pick people off in the split second like I can with the original counterstrike.

it also takes forever to switch weapons so "quick-sniping" ain't quick anymore. Oh well... I'll stick to no scoping.

oh yeah, no bunnyhopping. :D

i used to play it a lot, its pretty cool. though half life/half life 2 in general has way too many cheaters. i mean like every server you go on, there's at least 1 cheater.

I played it for approximately 1 hour before I went back to Red Orchestra for UT 2K4.

As far as a "realism" CT mod goes, Infiltration was hands down the best IMNSHO.

In Regards to the backwards weapons:

Battlefield Vietnam did the exact same thing. They said in a FAQ that it was purely an art thing, people like to see the action cycle, etc. Even the game developers thought it was lame because it was a big negative step towards realism.

But...it's a game.

I never played counterstrike, but played many other FPS games. If you want realism, at least as far as games go, and want SWAT type action, check out the Rainbow 6 series of games on both PC and XBox. Those are fantastic!
