If you were to purchase a brand new 30 caliber combat rifle today. What would it be and why?

either and svt-40 (im a russian fanatic) or an m1 garand. both are relativly the smae. simple, robust, accurate and two of the best general purpose calibers around.

Mauser M 98 - Its seen plenty of combat; even in its 30 Caliber variations (Israeli 308's, ect.)

PARA FAL. Either a NIB Original with chromed bore and chamber and 18.5" barrel, or a DSA.

AK clone, not sure what kind yet, with UltiMAK optics mount, Aimpoint M68 and AK-74 style muzzle brake, oh and a BJB SWIFT safety lever, the one with the bolt holdopen notch

M1 Garand. I trained on it in '62 and '63, and carried one in '66 and '67 after my issued M2 Carbine got wrapped around a tree.

And there's one hanging on my wall right now. :p

FAL in 18" or 16" barrel configuration, probably from DSA Arms.

20 shots, highly ergonomic, easy to maintain and carry. It'll put someone down out to 600 yards.

It was the issue rifle for 90-125 countries (and still is) for a reason.

It's funny - I read the word 'combat' and I automatically think of the SKS. I guess that I just don't equate combat with needing to take the 250+ yard shots that justify a full-on MBR. They may not be new, but the SKS is what I'd buy.

If the rifle simply *has* to be NIB - I'd probably take the DSA FAL...

I'd have to go with my dream rifle there. :)

Essentially an AR-180B but with a machined aluminum lower, Picatinny rail on top which still allowed for use of iron sights, fixed skeleton stock (like a Bulgarian AK folder, or ACE), Hk-style PG, and chambered in ye olde Czech 7.62x45mm.

Between this Fal and my Garand, I already have what I need. I bought the FAL first and I'd do it again.

Accurate enough to get the job done, plenty of firepower, cheap mags, about as reliable as an AK, simple to maintain and operate. This Imbel even has a chrome plated bore to extend barrel life, improve reliability and make it easier to clean.

Probably the Springfield M!A or other clone of the M14. SA has some M1A's that are National Match quality and because the .308 ammo is relatively cheap, you can shoot a ton of it and have a very accurate rifle out to many hundreds of yards.

I already have an M1 and a 1903A3 and IMHO, those would be good choices too. A Garand from the CMP can be re-barreled in .30-06 or .308 and it's not too difficult to find new components for it to make it very accurate and reliable. My 1903A3 was rearsenaled and put into storage before the CMP got it and sold it to me. The barrel is pristine and there were no marks anywhere at all on the receiver parkerizing when I puilled the bolt out!.

Probably an HK 91, or if I couldn't afford that (which I can't), a JLD PTR-91.

I am just very comfortable with the roller delayed blowback guns, and I am used to working on one (I own a CETME, which required a lot of work, and is very, very close to the HK91, just not quality wise).

I think it is a very durable, reliable and accurate system, and it's what I am most familiar with.

After owning and shooting just about everything available I settled on the AR-10.
