How many grains of imr3031 does it take to fill up a 30-30 case.
A load I found on MD Smith's reloading pages calls for 38 grains of imr3031 for speer 100 half jacket plinker but 38 grains fills up the case yet it doesn't mention compressed load. This is my first try at reloading on my own equipment. The scale is a new hornady balance scale.

Chawbaccer -Thanks for the tip. your words of caution are heeded. My marlin 30-30 is almost like new from the 70's (when I bought it) I don't want to blow it or me up. It really pains me when I get to a point in a project when the what to do next is not in the directions, not in a book, and not in my brain, and no one's around to ask. That's likely how someone came up with "The God is in the details". That's the biggest frustration of this Do it Myselfer.

I have a nra reloading book. Can someone recommend one, or perhaps two, reloading manuals that I could acquire that would provide everything else I need to know.

I believe you have some poor info. at 38grs. I believe 29-31grs. would be plenty with the 100gr. point. I use Hornady,Sierra,Speer,and the Modern Reloading Manual from Richard Lee for most of my info. All are good sources. You should be able to pick up a manual at any shooting supply store,also Wally world,or some of the Sporting Goods stores. As previously stated,read it and follow it for safety,yours,and your firearms!

My Speer manual is the only one I have at hand now and it doesn't list 3031 for light bullets, you might check your bullet manufactures site for loading data. If you have information for using 38 grains, it would have to be a max load in my opinion so you should back it down 10% for starting loads, say 34 grains, but please don't do that on my recomendation. I would suggest you get a can of IMR 4064, it just seems more versitile in my opinion with different weight bullets, I bet you will want to load for deer hunting. I can understand your frustration, there are so many different components to try out and its easy to get an information overload. Keep with it and watch for max pressure and you will be ok.

My Lyman 48th edition shows a 110 gr JRN using IMR3031 starting at 26.5 and maxing at 33.5 grains. Not sure where you got those specs, but you need to go back and slap them silly....
