I've got a Ruger MK I that is absolutely filthy. Does anybody have a link to some instructions on how to detail strip one of these guns??

LOVE my MKI. No link on MKI, but here's some help on a MKll, should be similar.

The difference between the MKI and MKII are how the slide is held open. On the MKIwhen you pull the slide back you then flip the safety up. On the MKII, the have a safety and a slide lock.

Disassembly is easy, reassembly a b____.

I first took one apart around 1959 as a kid. They haven't changed much. Still do it occasionally to refurbish used ones I find, but I would be inclined to field strip it, and just give it a blast with some solvent or other (disc brake cleaner) and a shot with an air hose. I have done trigger jobs on a couple of them, and even when proficient it's a bit of a chore.

The average person can do it with a good set of instructions, but thought I should point out that there is an alternative.

BTW I recall one of those sets of instructions that was drawn incorrectly...

I'd offer that you have a choice between a pipe cleaners and a couple cans of brake cleaner, or growing the third arm that is required for mere mortals to get the thing back together.

Sure, do it often enough and its not that bad, but the first couple times you try holding the springs back and keeping the sear aligned while you slide in the pin...BEERTENDER! :banghead:

If you take the bolt apart, watch out you don't lose the firing pin rebound spring. It's a little tiny bugger. Ruger was kind enough to send me another, but the pistol was out of service until it arrived. :o

Taking it apart is easy, it's putting it together that's hard!

Joking, it's only hard the first couple times. Believe me, it does get easier with practice! Hard to remember that when the bolt won't come back (again.)

But it does take a few repetitions until one gets the hang of it.

Take your time. A few times...

Field stripping these is no prob for me, I've done it several times. The other night I also managed to strip the hammer, sear and safety assembly out. Took forever to get back together right but now that I've done it once I'm sure I could do it faster. (not that I'm going to be trying again anytime soon.)
