Out of curiosity I did a search on the word "gun" on the major search engines to see what would turn up.

Alta vista, google, yahoo, MSN, Looksmart and a few others were used for this test.

The good news is:

4 out 5 listed pro gun sites on the first page such as: NRA, GOA, Ithaca, Gun broker and Guns America.

Google was the only search engine to list the Brady Campaign on the first page.

Isn't that odd?

It's a conspiracy I tell ya! Ban the bad search engines! Google will own all!

Seriously though, that is weird. I heard google searches are based on how many pages are linked to it, but I am probably wrong.

The thing that annoys me is trying to do research on a specific firearm and 90% of the results are either gaming sites or airsoft sites.

Nope, you are right.

I know I am going to get killed for this, but IMHO it is just as necessary for the anti-gun sites to come up when you typethe word GUN in. You would be yelling and screaming and writing letters if pro-gun sites didn't come up, why would yo udo the same to the other side.

Because compared to pro gun sites, the Anti-gun VPC, Brady and MMM are miniscule in regard to membership, web page hits and in their usage of the word gun.

For an anti gun site to show up on the first page of a search on the word gun
shows me that it was placed in a prominent spot on purpose.

That gets on my nerves too...still haven't seen a picture of a REAL original CZ-75.

You searched for gun. Not for pro gun or anything specific. The search engine shows you results for the word gun. It would probably pull up games also. Nail guns. Caulk guns. Why shouldn't it bring up an anti- website? You want a pro gun site, then search for it. You want an anti- site, search for it. You want both, don't specify. If I search for reviews on an item, I will search "Playstation review". That will give me both positive and negative reviews. If I am trying to sell the unit to someone, I will search "good Playstation review" so that the product looks good. If I want both, I don't specify.

Assuming a search for "gun" should only pull up items that are pro gun seems stupid. Go search for sex, are you going to get upset when a website comes up that is anti- sex? No. But if you search sex, you will get a bunch of porn. That is what dominates the market. A search engine is supposed to show what you want to see. You are not supposed to have to go to page 4,245 on the sex search to find something anti- sex, if that is what is looked for most.

That seems about right to me. It is too bad that VPC showed up on the first page.

I just googled for "gun" and got thesmokinggun.com first, gunbroker second, and gun owners of america third. Brady is somewhere down the page.

Just another thought too. When media is linking to information on guns, do they more commonly link to NRA or VPC? And when that AP release is sent to thousands of web sites, I could see them getting shoved up real quick.

Anyone remember when they could use google's directory to look up the website of gun manufacturers? They took that down most likely because they are anti-gun.

gearbox, I'm not pleased with Google at all. But, in their defense, I think a lot of gun manufacturers haven't spent the time optimizing their sites for the search engines as they should.

Try searching for Ed Brown pistols. One of the sites I did comes up first, then there's other sites, then Ed Brown's. My own site beats out many of the manufacturers.
