I am looking at buying another "toy" sometime soon, but I would like it to be something to compete with in IPSC if I choose to later. When I was at the range the other day I witnessed someone rigging up to compete with a 1911 style pistol. I was under the impression that you needed a double action first shot to compete. Can you compete with a single action, or was this a double action that I have not seen before? Any help in picking out my next "toy" would be appreciated.

Double action 1st shot is for production division. The "Limited 10" division is in spirit a single stack SA 1911 class. Buy 1911, some Wilson 10rd mags and have a blast, very common gun, shot one a bunch myself.

That's the division/class I usually compete into! Go to www.uspsa.org to learn more about rules and equipment. Have a fun and safe shooting!

Be careful! When used together, the terms "1911", "IPSC", & "toy" can be a VERY expensive venture! ;)

I concur!
I gave up my other hobies for IPSC and never looked back!....uhm... okay, except paintball (spring and summer only) and buying more guns! :D

Carson,
Make sure to observe and ask some question if you have any on your first match, most IPSC competitors are very helpful in my experience. Don't go crazy on buying equipments, there are some that are not really neccessary. Spend more on ammo and practice. Good luck!

Guns to consider for IPSC/USPSA.
1. Any good single stack 1911, Kimber, Colt, SA, SW,DW for limited 10. If you like single stacks this is the place to be.
2. STI, SVI, PARA(if you have a good gunsmith) in .40 cal plus Glock 35 for limited. Prepare to spend lots of money on hicap mags.
3. Glock, Sig, berretta etc. 9mm for production. Here is where I suggest you stick to a Glock. Shorter trigger pull is definately an advantge. This is the division to run what ya brung as long as its not single action.
4. STI SVI race gun for Open $$$$$$$$

Personally I use a SW 1911 for L10 and a CZ75std IPSC for limited.
I dont recommend the CZ Ipsc because hicaps are hard to find but its a great gun.

Para LDA full size in either .40 cal or .45 cal fits the bill for both limited 10 and production. ' might beable to use the same gear depending on what you get. Same also for Glock 35, that is, if you like Glocks.
