Police marksmen have shot dead a man said to have been wielding a samurai sword on a busy main road.

The 26-year-old was shot on the A63 near Hull, East Yorkshire, following reports of a van being driven the wrong way down the carriageway.

Police said the man got out of the van and began to approach the marksmen.

He was shot with baton rounds but got up and continued to make his way towards the officers, who then shot him dead.

It was the first time Humberside Police had used a firearm during an operation.

The dead man is understood to be Simon Murden, whose father David is believed to be the director of local charity, And Albert.

The blue Transit van at the centre of the shooting had the organisation's words emblazoned across it.

The 26-year-old's farmhouse in Sparkmill Lane, Beverley, has been sealed off by officers.

The And Albert shop in Beverley was closed. A note placed in the window said: "Closed due to bereavement."

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into the shooting, as it attempts to establish if the man was armed.

At a news conference, Assistant Chief Constable (Operations) of Humberside Police, John Crosse, confirmed the man who was shot dead had been carrying "sword type weapons".

The A63, which is the main commuter road into Hull, remained closed in both directions for several hours as forensic officers examined the scene.

There had been suggestions that the man may have been attempting to hijack a tanker on the road.

Either way, her got the job done. I am sure that the poor cops are going to go through hell with the inquiry board.

Kind of reminds me of this guy who took a rifle to a tank fight.

Similar thing happened here in Seattle in 1997, but with a different outcome...
That resourcefulness was needed on April 3 of this year. At 11:30 AM, Tony Allison, dressed in a black leather jacket, black jeans, and sunglasses, strode down a busy downtown Seattle street wielding a newly-purchased Samurai sword. He waved the sword at anyone who approached him. Officers reported to the scene, at the corner Pike Street and Second Avenue, and so began a standoff that was to last eleven hours.
...At 9:45 PM, fire hoses were directed at him at full force, and knocked him down. Police commanders also sprayed tear gas. Finally at 10:00 PM, the SWAT ladder team, along with an officer with a "pike pole", rushed in to force him against the wall. Using the end of the ladder to force him down on to the sidewalk and against the wall, the pike pole was used to maneuver the sword. Allison still refused to let the sword go, but an officer successfully pried his fingers from the handle. Allison was medicated and taken off to the Harborview Medical Center.

I don't blame the Humberside cops for shooting the guy though. Charging cops with a sword is monumentally stupid, unless you want to die.

Puts me in mind of Stephenson's Cryptonomicon.
"What advice do you, as the youngest American fighting man ever to win both the Navy Cross and the Silver Star, have for any young Marines on their way to Guadalcanal?"

Shaftoe doesn’t have to think very long. The memories are still as fresh as last night’s eleventh nightmare: ten plucky Nips in Suicide Charge!

"Just kill the one with the sword first."

"Ah," Reagan says, raising his waxed and penciled eyebrows, and cocking his pompadour in Shaftoe’s direction. "Smarrrt —you target them because they’re the officers, right?"

"No, ****head!" Shaftoe yells. "You kill ’em because they’ve got ****ing swords! You ever had anyone running at you waving a ****ing sword?"

I sense an Australia-ish sword law looms for England. That was in England, right? Australia has safe storage laws and registration for swords.
