I took the plunge and bought an OD Green one today during lunch. Seems to be a nice pistol.

As a first-time 1911 owner, I'd like to know if the GI model a good choice for a no-frills range/ccw gun?

An excellent choice. You have a great gun for the money. Also there are many, many aftermarket accessories available.

Hello! and congrats on your purchase of a Springer WW-II G.I. replica .45 :D

As has been stated, these are some excellent guns for the money. Even
with the tiny military sights, once you get used to them shooting it is a
breeze. Now you need to add one that is parkerized, and one in stainless
steel! :uhoh:  :D Enjoy~

Thanks guys!

Your words really helped me to get over the wee bit of buyer's remorse I was feeling yesterday afternoon.

Saw one of the green ones at the Hickory show last saturday. Good looking gun. Wasn't as green as I thought from having only seen that color in pictures. If they'd just put a tad more gray with the green, it would look like some of the M1 carbines.

Yeah, let us know how it shoots for you. I'm thinking I might have to have the shorter barreled one...Champion? Or whatever its called.

Please, please let us know how it shoots and your perceptions about it. I am on the "cusp" of buying a GI and would really like to hear your reactions to it. Looking forward to it :)

Buyer's remorse? You've gotta be kidding. I can hardly wait to get my next Springfield Armory M1911A1 pistol. I've got a Mil Spec custom and a GI Champion so far, and both have been (I'll say it again, and again...) relentless tackdrivers. Next one for me will be a stainless Mil Spec, which I will tweak a bit for reindeer games. I would buy these guns even at Colt prices. Dairycreek, get off the cusp, jump on the team, and come on in for the Big Win.

I bought one when they were called the WWII edition. I love mine. It's been 100%. Cost about 1/2 the price of my Kimber. The tiny sights havn't been an issue, the gun points so well. Most of my shooting is at steel plates and gongs, so I can't comment on paper accurancy. I've shoot 230g LRN, 200g PFP, 200g PSWC, 200g LSWC and 185 MSWC without a hitch.

I have not used the factory mag. I have the inexpensive CMC blued 8rounders and a couple 10 rounders that I use. I liked the wood "GI" grips, mine came with black plastic and they sent me a free pair. I was sure about the finich, but I just wipe mine down with a little CLP and that's about it.

I love my SA GI Champion. It is a great range gun. I've got about 500rds through it so for, with zero hiccups, with all different kinds of ammo. It's accurate, even with the small sights. I don't think there's a better deal in a .45 out there. No remorse here, I'll be keeping mine a long long time, thank you.

Took the pistol out for the first time yesterday and ran 150 rounds through it. I was very impressed with its performance. Off-hand groups at 7 to 15 yards averaged around 1" -2" with 230gr PMC fmj and there were no FTF or FTE using the two factory magazines that came with the pistol.

I must admit that I was somewhat leery of the GI .45 simply because I had heard of the 1911's propensity to have feeding problems. I'd also heard that these things aren't too terribly accurate. With experience now under my belt, I can personally say that I am now firmly ensconsed in the 1911 camp and will be buying more of JMB's wonderful design as money becomes available.

p.s. I'll also be getting dies and tons of reloading supplies!

Greeting's ojibweindian My Friend-

Rest assured, the Springer G.I. 45 will only get better! :) The more you shoot
it, the better the slide mates to the frame; and once it gets completely
broken in; well my friend you will be off to the races. Enjoy~ :D

Unreliable, inaccurate 1911's are just like unicorns - You could find one or make one, but it would be very rare and unnatural.

I shot one yesterday and was impressed, even more so when I heard what the owner paid for it. The thin front sight might take some getting used to for me, but is felt good and we both were getting 4"-6" groups at 7-8 yards. I'm not sure what he was using, but I have talked with people who really like the Remington UMC 230 fmj. If I hadn't just purchased a Sig 220, I would seriously consider the Springfield. I might any way.

Love my WWII, which was what I believe the GI used to be called. I haven't shot it a ton, but so far it has been flawless. I don't know a better gun for the money. I also had the black grips out of the box, but a call to Springfield and they sent me brown ones free of charge.

Mine came with wood grips.

I'm going to get another one sometime in the not too distant future. Thinking about a Springfield Loaded. Who knows? Whatever I get, it'll be good. The only thing I wonder now is what took me so long to get into the 1911 family.

I had to have some type of 1911, and the GI fit the bill perfectly.
