Howdy y'all, I checked in a while back asking for advice about what gun to use for a hog hunt. I ended up taking my Guide Gun in .45/70, and used some warm 405gr. hardcast handloads. Here's what happened:

Took 40-yd. shot at 200# boar in heavy brush, hit left leg (a bit too low, I was aiming for lower shoulder) and boar started hobbling off. Quick second shot right through the hams, that put him down but didn't kill him. Third and final shot from 10yds. sent him on to Piggy Heaven.

General consensus at the hunting lodge was that a 300gr. JHP would have been a better choice, plenty of penetration along with some expansion. Consensus also was that my shot placement was poor, and that's really the key--i.e., there's no "magic bullet." I heard a couple of stories about hogs shot w/.22LR (1 shot, mind you) with the result being DRT pig.

My excuse for the poor shot placement was my nerves, or what Mr. Petzal refers to as the "quacking s---fits." However, my freezer is full of fresh pork (tastes much better than I expected) and I had a great time. Thanks to all who chimed in w/advice; the Guide Gun makes a great deep-woods hog blaster and isn't a biatch to carry up & down those Tennessee mountains!

If you haven't tried it, find a place that you can hunt hogs with dogs and a knife. For me, it was the ultimate rush. The hog seemed to be somewhat excited about it also.

It gave me a whole new appreciation for pit bulls. This seems to be what they were born for. To be real honest, given a pack of dogs, there is not much wildlife anywhere on earth that I would be afraid to tackle with a hand weapon. Having said that, I'm sure somebody will point out something like killer bees but it sure was a lesson in primitive hunting effectiveness for a mostly armchair warrior like me.

Lets get real here you tackled a hog with your combat knife and killed it? do you have details or any thing to back this up with ? im guessing maybe it was a three legged hog. maybe it was already shot. :scrutiny:

Airbornekyle1, lots of people (well, relatively speaking! :D ) hunt hogs with knives, including one of our moderators. It's not my cup of tea, but those who've done it say it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on. Personally, I want to see them do it wearing those Victoria's Secret outfits, then tell me that... :D

Or maybe you're just searching a little too hard for the next LuckyinKentucky or Gecko45 to make fun of. Hunting hogs with knives and dogs is no joke.

I must be a real wimp because I can't ever see myself trying to kill a hog with a knife. I might use a spear like H&H has but not a knife.

Until recently, I never would have believed that people hunt hogs w/knives either, but sure enough people do it all the time with hog dogs. Didn't get to see it, but heard about a fella taking a hog with a Buck Special (and the help of some mountain curs) during my visit to the TN mountains.

The guide on my hunt in TN showed me a spear he kept for adrenaline junkies to use for what he called "real hog hunting." Maybe next time...
