The weapon the officer is holding appears to be an old HK VP70 machine pistol made back in the 70s.

I second Bronco45's nomination.

HK VP70 is correct.

According to the ALIENS: Colonial Marines Technical Manual (and my own previous obsession with reading all the articles on HKPro.com), it's a VP70. Vasquez uses one toward the end to shoot at the aliens in the tunnel.
ON EDIT:
That's not an officer, either. There were only two ground officers present with the forces on LV-426, Lt. Gormann and Lt. Ripley (the latter wasn't even with the Corps). I don't know what Ferro or Spunkmeyer's ranks were, but I think they were Warrant Officers. I think the guy pictured if Pvt. Frost.

Vasquez, use a vP70z? BITE YOUR TONGUE! Go back and rewatch, and tell me which 1911 she uses on the alien in the vent duct!

Vasquez does use a 1911, but it is not the same actor. It is actually the producer standing in! According to the collectors DVD, the actress had never shot a pistol before and was not doing it properly (flinching, holding it properly etc). The producer was the only woman available on set who had any experience with handguns so she stood in for the 2 sec where Vasquez blasts the Alien. I guess the .45 ACP is effective for Alien hunting.

Gentlemen, we had earlier discussed the issue of Vasquez' pistol in an earlier thread. After going through frame by frame of the air duct scene and using digital zoom of several side views, I came to the conclusion that she is using a S&W Model 59 or 459. See the earlier thread for details.
If you disagree, please post pictures of the pistol so we can all look at it. I could not, since my PowerDVD program apparently cannot cut and paste stills. I do agree on the VP70, which was also carried by Lt. Gorman in several scenes.

Really? When she dropped the mag, I'd swear it was a custom Colt commander of a kind - link to that thread with pics?

to stop the monsters once and for all is to use a glock. the movie makers want to make money so they don't us glocks because they know if they used glocks we would kill all monsters, they use other guns so they can't kill them.

On the topic of movie guns... Anyone know of that movie "Training Day" with Denzel Washington, What are those guns that the old guy reading the paper has, when they raid his house for that money. They are two little handguns they call them "the stinger" i figured they were .22 pistols w/ stinger loads in them..
Anyways if anyone knows what I am talking about post what they are, they look cool.

Oh God. I can't believe I missed the Vasquez part >.< There's even an outline of the quote-unquote "M4 Pistol" that looks suspiciously similar to your average 1911-looking auto.
I must be slipping in my old age.

The pistol Vasquez uses to fight in the access tunnel is either a S&W 39-2 or an early 439.

The producer was the only woman available on set who had any experience with handguns so she stood in for the 2 sec where Vasquez blasts the Alien. I assume the producer in question is Gale Anne Hurd? She was married to James Cameron, stark raving gun nut and the director of Aliens for a few years.

I don't remember what year the movies take place in, but it impresses me that the 1911 is STILL going strong and the sidearm of choice along side of other new weapons!!!! :p
Yes I realize this is only the movies, but it gives me the warm and fuzzies anyway!! ;)

Well, this one time maybe an exception. If you were in a tunnel of aliens, you might toss the 4 Rules out the window. I'm pretty sure I would
