Kinda confused about "gun related"...

Just wondering why Felonious Monk's thread:

http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13035

was considered off-topic, and summarily closed. He even asked about the local firing ranges...

Seems somebody else asked a similar question when he was getting an assignment to the Washington, D.C. area, and there was no problem with being off-topic.

Not that I'm looking forward to seeing Runt trump Lendsringer again, but damn, he's fast on the lock button! :what:

I seem to recall at least a couple of topics--May have been both on TFL, but pretty sure one was here on THR, about places to settle in Texas and elsewhere--Some connection with RKBA attitudes, yes, but also about schools, climate, traffic, crime stats, and so forth.

I'd be interested in knowing the cause, too.

If I was in GenDisc, any thread that included the phrase "To Keep This Gun-Related...", or any derivative thereof, would automatically get locked.
It's kinda like "I know I was speeding, but..."
"Well, then, this ticket shouldn't be a surprise." ;)

You ever go fishing? ;)

Look, if somebody says: "I'm relocating from Graustarkia to Backwoodistan, is my Graustarkia CCW permit good there? What're the laws like? Any good ranges?", then that's one thing. When someone says "I'm moving from Upper Revolta to Absurdistan. What's the traffic like there? What are good neighbourhoods? How much are houses?

...oh, and what's the CCW law like so the moderators don't shut this down", well, that's just kinda askin' for it, dontcha think? ;)

And since one big aspect of where I move to involves legality of my collection, I made the assumption (probably wrong) that a household move question here on THR would typically cover places to shoot, gun laws, gun shops, etc. His gun range question led me to believe that, unless he added it after the fact.

Yep, some of those are just plain blatant, when posters try to steer the topic back onto track. No excuses there.

Nor am I arguing the fact that it's Oleg's forum, per the rules, moderators get all the dirty jobs and none of the thanks. Nor is it a First Amendment issue, it's just like the old soap joke, it's his soap and he's more than justified in washing as hard and fast as he wants. ;)

Beauty of my current deployment is, looks like my Washington D.C. assignment is turned off. No sweat off my nose, but they better hurry up and start, and finish, this war before they enact Stop-Loss again. Oh, and if the North Koreans would stop sending MiG's to check my fellow aircrew out... :(

The line between on/off-topic is grey and fuzzy. I'd be happy if we just lost the patently off-topic items like "who here hates the Lower Molchuckstanians?" or "Best porn star to play with after range time"...borderline topics would get rather more patience then. Every time it's a judgement call and we make no claim to perfection or infallliability.
