I was on Newt Livesay's site looking at holsters and he sells Kubation's that fit on your key chain, and makes the claim that they are "flesh eaters"....Sounds nasty, what is it and how do you use it?

Thanks,

Jim

It's a small impact baton, about the length of a .50 BMG cartridge and maybe 1/2" in diameter; you can use it as a striking weapon to just about any part of the body, and it can break bones if you do your part.

Thanks, do you know of a WEB site that shows the basic moves?

Can strike with it. However, you can use it various ways, but mainly as a "pressure point enhancer" in a qin na hold. Good for passive resistance types encountered by law enforcement, e.g. once you obtain a lock you can reinforce it with the kubotan (position, THEN submission, not submission right off the bat).

Have seen it used quite effectively in courtroom settings. E.g., "the mummy" (where Cledus resists by keeping his starchy backside in the chair instead of skipping off to DOC). I'm less enthused about it "on the street" as the nature of jackets, drugs, alcohol, will to fight, etc.

Someone used to have a .pdf copy of Kubota's Kubotan: Instrument of Attitude Adjustment up online, but I can't find it with a perfunctory search. I have it bookmarked at home.

These might be of interest.

Looking at my model 2 Persuader on my keychain here, it is a 5.5" long and 0.5" diameter plastic cylinder. Speaking as a former instructor, I think it is best used as a pressure point compliance tool: essentially for come-along holds and take-downs. The blunt end can also be quite effective as a poke in the solar plexus. Using it as a key flail or the like is not particularly effective in my view. I think you would be hard pressed to break bones with it, unless you leveraged a finger bone or struck the nose with it.

Advantages are that it is very low-profile, although you cannot take it on board aircraft and in many government buildings or courthouses. Disadvantages are that you are up close and personal with your subject, who is no doubt disapproving of your compliance actions upon him/her.

"Sturdy pens".

I swear one day I'm going to make my own line of "tactical jewelry and personal conviences". These will include low-profile objects that could easily be pressed into use as defensive tools.

Then I'll have to see if the current owner of the name "Spirit Wear" wants to sell me the rights to it.

Concur w/Mills Creek. Use it to apply pressure against pressure points. Using it as a flail is laughable. Using it as an impact weapon, well, it's light and unless you can hit vital spots, forget it. Pressure point.

Kubatons are designed as a pressure poinit self defense weapon. I've never heard of the flail method. However, if you know how to use it, it does work well as an impact weapon but you HAVE TO know how it is used. I have a 2nd degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do and used to carry one on my keys before I got my CCW permit. It's size makes it easily conceable in the palm of your hand. A key aspect to the kubaton is that it's employment should be done more of as a last resort due to the closeness necessary to use it. Basic awareness of your surroundings though is the first line of defense. Also I wouldn't suggest getting one without learning how to use it because if used improperly you only serve to anger the assailant not stop him.

Thanks for the information, I agree "you have to know how to use it". That's the key, we had a guy here in the Dallas area that got into some "Road Rage" and proceeded to stop the car that cut him off, he was big on self defense, but either not enough or mis-judged what was going to happen....Three guys beat him with bats, he died four days later....

When of the appropriate size it can be used as a fist load as well as a pressure point tool and you can strike with the ends projecting from your fist.

Newt's Flesh Eaters are slotted with un-radiused edges so that they dig into the skin and hurt like the dickens.

Using it as an impact weapon, well, it's light and unless you can hit vital spots, forget it. It's light, but if you use it to reinforce a hammerhand strike, that won't matter. Using a sabre grip and thrusting as if it were a blunt knife will also work. Check out Erich's links to Don Rearic's site, he's got some good articles on the kubotan/koppo stick.
