Do any of you have any info on an M1A Made by Federal Ordinance? It has a folding stock which may or may not be original. The action looks pretty nice but that's all I know about it. Are these US made? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Apparently, these receivers were the worst kind of junk.

The M14s of choice are built on Enterprise, Springfield or Armscorp receivers. Polytech are okay, but supposedly require a new bolt and fitting. Federal Ordnance are best ignored, or the gun bought for the parts and assembled with one of the above items.

You can ask some other very knowledgable persons about them at the M1/M14 Forum at

I have a Federal Ordnance M1A. I have read all the stuff on them. Made in Calif (receivers) and fitted with military parts. FI is long out of business. Problems were mostly out of spec receivers as I understand it.

Mine looks good, functions perfectly and is quite accurate. (I am NOT a formal target shooter however.) I shoot it a lot and have no problems with it whatsoever. That is not to say that the next one may be a total piece of trash. Mine is a VERY low serial number-don't know if that makes any difference or not.

I have one that has the FO cast receiver and the rest Chinese parts. I lapped in a new GI bolt and replaced the (awful) stock with a GI stock, but otherwise did nothing to it. It shoots as well or sometimes better (depending on ammo) than my Springfield Armory, Inc. M1A NM.

I have seen reports of cracked receivers but they did not result in any disasters. Like other makes, quality control seemed to vary and FO never had a great reputation, but my rifle has been fired quite a bit with no problems.

Thanks for the info, guys. I can pick this one up for about $650 so I'm trying to decide what to do. If I get it I'll swap the folding stock for a walnut or fiberglass one. Do any of you know where I can get a scout mount for it like the Springfield Armory M1A Scout has?

They had the worst reputation but often times they were the only M14 readily available. Condemned GI parts, poor tolerances, and it's the only firearm that ever blew-up on me. Fed Ord replaced it free and I traded it away the same day. I would choose a Norinco before I would ever use a Federal Ordnance again but then I am a little bias.:barf:
