Jane Fonda Regrets 1972 Visit to Vietnam Gun Site

1 hour, 25 minutes ago Entertainment - Reuters

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Jane Fonda regrets her visit to a North Vietnamese gun site in 1972, the actress and fitness guru said in an interview with CBS television show "60 Minutes" to be aired on Sunday.

The actress defended her trip to Vietnam in 1972, which won her the nickname "Hanoi Jane." But she said her visit to a North Vietnamese anti-aircraft gun site used to shoot down U.S. pilots was a "betrayal" of the U.S. military.

"The image of Jane Fonda, Barbarella, Henry Fonda's daughter ... sitting on an enemy aircraft gun was a betrayal," she said, calling the act, "The largest lapse of judgment that I can even imagine."

But she said she did not regret visiting Hanoi, or being photographed with American prisoners of war there.

"There are hundreds of American delegations that had met with the POWs," she said. "Both sides were using the POWs for propaganda. ... It's not something that I will apologize for."

Three decades on, Vietnam continues to be a divisive issue for Americans. During last year's election campaign, some Republican supporters of President Bush called his Democratic rival, Sen. John Kerry, "Hanoi John" for protesting the Vietnam War after fighting in it and receiving five medals for combat duty.

I like how she, at one point, refers to herself as 'Henry Fonda's daughter'. I imagine once one reaches a certain age, they tremble at knowing how they must have deeply disappointed one or more of their parents...

"Apology" my scrawny white posterior. This just makes my blood boil. :fire:

EARTH TO TRAITOR JANE: it's not your sitting on a farking gun that's the problem, it's your turning in American POWs to their captors for trying to pass messages through you. This is what most of us would call "giving aid to the enemy." Which you should look up in the Constitution sometime. You'll find it in Article III, section 3, under the heading TREASON

Ooh...I'd better stop thinking about this, or I'm sure to have Art's Grammaw breathing down my neck.

She conveniently neglects to mention turning over the notes that our brave men spritited to her. They were all tortured unmercefully, and one or more may have even died as a result. She can apologize all she wants. That emotion by her is more for assuaging her deep spritiual guilt than being sorry for being a traitor to our POW's, to say nothing of our nation.

She can kiss my aye double toothpicks. When she stand before those survivors and holds their hands, bows her head, goes to her knees and begs for their forgiveness, only then will I grant her the respect that that act would accomplish.

The bottom feeding b***h can apologize until she dies and I will never acknowledge her apology, watch a movie, program, etc. she is in, read her book, or knowingly do anything that will provide her any form of aid or comfort.

Whatever else you want to say about Jane and her politics, the above incident probably never happened.

Both sides used them for propaganda? Hmm. I don't remember any "pro-war" people standing with the POWs, smiling and laughing with their captors. Then again, most people didn't get to see the POWs, unless they were celebrating the peace loving peoples of North Vietnam.

After spending 25 months in RVN and seeing what that stinking pig did, I would still like to have a "meeting" with her. It would be a meeting of my foot to her ass!!!!!!!!!! :cuss: :cuss: :cuss:

"Both sides were using the POWs for propaganda. ... It's not something that I will apologize for."

What she fails to understand is that those guys in the prison weren't actors pretending to be victims of torture just for the sake of propaganda. They were Americans, and it was her obligation as an American, even one opposed to the war, to respect their courage and sacrifice, even if she couldn't honor it.

Imagine if she'd gone to Auschwitz and posed next to the ovens, smiling her little Commie heart out.

Actually the "Commies" had their own place at Auschwitz. Not as bad maybe but hardly a picnic.
Look, I have nothing for ole Jane but if people want to criticize at least base the criticism on something true. There's certainly enough there.

Maybe I'm just dense, but would someone mind quoting the part where she appologizes? Saying you regret doing something or that something you did was bad IS NOT an appology.
Calling her a despicable human being is an understatement.

"Both sides were using the POWs for propaganda. ... It's not something that I will apologize for."

When she says "both sides", does she mean the US and VN or the pro and anti war "sides"? Not that it makes much difference, she acknowledges that she will not apologize.

Normally I urge caution when people form the lynch mob. In this case, what she did was wrong on so many levels. Saying "I disagree with this war" and backing up one's beliefs with jail time is one thing. Saying "I disagree with this war" and actively helping out people that are torturing American soldiers is another. Calling American soldiers that were tortured "liars" is nearly beyond belief.

I truly wonder what is wrong inside her brain.

I would love to know why the "turning in the messages" crap keeps resurfacing.

http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.asp

Doesn't make her actions right, but continuing to spread this horsehockey about her is just as ignorant as the antis using terms like "Assault weapon" and "cop-killer ammo."

I suppose everyone in this thread thinks that Cindy Williams of Laverne & Shirley wrote that piece about the military being overpaid, too.

Hanoi Jane has a new movie coming out. That is why she is on 60 minutes and making her comments. I can't stand her and she is a disgrace to all women in this country. She is one of many reasons I AM NOT a femenist, lefty, liberal or will EVER vote for the DEMS EVER. Well I guess ya'll understand my feelings of this pitiful useful idiot. Does she not realize that she would have been in the first bunch of persons killed under a Communist regime? :cuss:

Alright guys, I will ask a question that will probably make some of you very mad but here it is. Has it actually been proven that she turned the POW in to the vietnamese? I have read both stories and they each have convincing arguements (especially about her turning on the prisoner). I personally believe that she is a commie and a traitor, but I didn't come from that era.

Interesting point. Every now and then an a big time liberal protestor type will let something like this slip. For some of the most militant there is no actual distinction. A lot of anti war people are simply anti US and will support whoever the enemy happens to be. When she says "both sides" she makes it very clear that she was pro-communist rather than anti-war. The fact that she made that statement today tells me that nothing has changed in that respect.
