THR Virtual Match - APRIL 2005

For those who may not be familiar with the general rules of the matches please see the rules FAQ (http://http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=64130) .
http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=64130

Now that “March Madness” is over, it is time for our “Crazy April THR match”. I considered many different options for this month but settled on something relatively simple.

This months target is a normal bullseye target…..APRIL FOOLS!…It is a crazy version of a bullseye target. It consists of a set of rings, like a normal target, but they are not really circles, they are not concentric, and the scoring for each ring is a bit different. Take a look at the TARGET (http://members.aol.com/way2go4159/CRAZY_APRIL.pdf)and you will see what I mean.

Scoring will allow you to choose the higher score if your shot breaks the line between scoring rings. However, the gray “penalty” ring will be an exception; [b]you MUST record a “minus 3” score for any shot that breaks the line into that ring from either side.

Shots falling outside the outer ring will count as zero.

The standard distances will be 10 yards for Pistol and 25 yrds for Rifle.

Five rounds per target.

Scoring:

The final score you report must include :
THR NAME
CLASS
SCORE TOTAL ___________(plus tell us the #shots hitting the penalty ring)
Target Distance (yards)

PISTOL STOCK CLASS - Standard pistols with barrels 6" or less
PISTOL IMPROVED - Pistols with significant improvements from out-of-the-box or pistols with barrels more than 6".
PISTOL SCOPED - Any scoped pistol
RIFLE STOCK CLASS - Standard rifles with iron sights
RIFLE SCOPED - Any scoped rifle
AIRGUN PISTOL- un-scoped airgun
AIRGUN RIFLE – un-scoped air rifle

Three entries per class, per shooter are allowed. You can enter as many classes as you want if you have the proper equipment to qualify.

The target can be found HERE (http://members.aol.com/way2go4159/CRAZY_APRIL.pdf)

(I just wanted to get that out of the way before I shot the target.) ;)

Come on guys. It won't be so tough. The diameter of the inner penalty ring is 4.5 inches. You should be able to keep your shots within that without too much trouble. It's not like I'm requiring you to shoot one handed or with a time limit, etc.

Maybe next month.....

For pistol, are you supposed to shoot these offhand or rested?

This is going to be the one where being trained to shoot COM for four years is going to kill me.

This being my first VM ( can I join in or is this only for certain people? ) I need to reread the rules and maybe I can fit in a shoot tomorrow afternoon.

griz
April 2, 2005, 07:46 AM
Hey Darkmind, everybody is invited. Despite my head banging it doesn't look too tricky, keep them mostly in the black and you'll be all right.

And answering a question I have asked myself on a previous match, everything is off hand unless otherwise noted.

April 2, 2005, 09:48 AM
Yup...What Griz said is correct.

Glad to see we have some new shooters trying the match this month!

ezypikns - Can you look at your scoring again? I see +5 +5 +8 +8 +4 for your five shots. That equals +30 I believe.

I shot the number 5 clean off the target. Since the area was near the 10, I figured it must be a 9. It is however, a crazy target. I'm still pleased with my score though. And many thanks for providing a great way to compete with others and have a lot of fun.

Thanks. I did read the FAQ but didn't see it mentioned.

Planning on hitting the range later today, I'll print up a couple and give it a go!

"I was laughing too hard at your target when I noticed that "PENALTY" was spelled wrong, to have a score worth posting "

I was wondering if anyone would notice that. I saw it after I put it up there. My spell check software needs some help I guess. But, I got it right 2 out of three times! :D

Well, I didn't do sooo terrible I guess, but much to my surprise there were only 4 holes in the paper when I got the target back! Either I managed to put 2 rounds though the same hole (I'd like to believe this! The lowest punch is slightly larger and the paper torn more... hmmm  ) or I had one hell of a flyer that didn't even hit the paper (that would be sad). Or I only loaded 4 rounds.. but I'm pretty sure I didn't do that.

I shot this twice, with two different pistols, but my other was only a 27 so we'll just forget that.

hey, this looks fun! once i sight in my new Remington hopefully i'll be able to participate in this month's match. if not, next month.

one QUESTION:
the distance i shoot the rifle with is about 120 feet (my mind does not work in yards yet, i have to multiply yardage by three so i know the distances!) as opposed to the 75 feet/25 yards you specify. is it okay for me to shoot from a farther distance?

"the distance i shoot the rifle with is about 120 feet (my mind does not work in yards yet, i have to multiply yardage by three so i know the distances!) as opposed to the 75 feet/25 yards you specify. is it okay for me to shoot from a farther distance?"

The short answer is yes, you may shoot at a longer distance and submit your scores. I will post them in the summary. However, unless someone else shoots at the same distance you will be 'in a class by yourself'.

Selecting the distance to be used for these matches has been an ongoing issue that I struggle with each month. Not everyone has access to the same type of range set-up and some like to shoot at different distances for other reasons. But, on the other hand, if I don't set a specific distance it is not possible to compare scores fairly. I experimented with allowing the shooters to choose their own distance and trying to factor that into the scoring. That worked OK but I never felt it accurately allowed for the differences.

So, for this month I have gone to specified distances. If anyone wants to shoot other distance (hopefully in addition to the course of fire description) go ahead.

Not a bad turn out for the April match. Lots of new shooters joining the fun as well.
Cropcirclewalker gets the "most prolific" award (8 entries) this month. I'll be interested to see how many he does next month!
Little Loudmouth gets the "most out-of-the-box" award for his attempt at creating a slingshot class.
M67 gets the "coolest gun used in the match" award for using his old luger. Perhaps we need a C&R class?
