There's a lot of ground to cover with that question and no easy answer.

The pinnacle in English guns might be Purdey, Holland and Holland or maybe Boss. Purdey is however the name that might a nose ahead of the rest.

Shifting to America, the names change. The Parker is the standard but the Fox and the Winchester Model 21 would be competitors for the crown.

In Italy, there is a plethora of guns to choose. In SxS, Piotti is a name frequently mentioned but Abbiatico and Salvinelli would be legitimate contenders.

In Germany there is Hartmann and Weiss, the Spanish have many grand makers including Arrizabalaga, Arrieta, Garbi, AyA and Grulla. The French have the Bruchets who make the Darne and Dumolin and Lebeau Corally in Belgium are not be ignored.

The most famous? Depends where you are and what you want.

So many guns, so little time.

My guess, the SXS Doc Holliday used at the OK Corral.

Second place, the 10 gauge, 22" barreled Parkers bought and used by Wells Fargo for stage and rail guards.

There are literally hundreds of makers.

Greener was a well-respected name years ago.

The nicest SXS I've ever handled was a Greener at a gunshow several years back. One of these days, when I'm rich and famous...

John, in connection with the thread on 10 gauge NEFs....

A decade and more gone past, a local gunsmith took a 10 gauge Greener SxS, bobbed the barrels to 20" or so, and set up some all brass cased loads of pistol balls for a Navy Colt capnball pushed out by lots of Pyrodex. Call it Max dram 0000. Effect at 20 yards was Claymore like. It was his "House Gun".

These were not 3 1/2" like modern 10s, but the older 2 7/8" case.

Yup, good for quail if the 0000 were replaced with hard 8s, about a teacup full I guess. The thing handled nicely,BTW. Not all excess is wretched....
