Opinion on Mateba .357 auto-revolver.

Hey everyone.........I came over from GT and heard that one of the mod's here owned a Mateba........I was thrilled. So here is the thread that I put up on GT.
I'm thinking about getting this kitten here.
I've heard alot about how fantastic Mateba's are, low recoil, very accurate, and sturdy. (The cad of revolvers)
This one here has a 3 inch barrel and a nickel finish. Also has a removable compensator (which is a plus)
But I'm not too sure if it's worth the $800 price tag. And if I'm gonna pay eight-hundred smackers, should I just get the one with a 6 inch barrel so I get more bang for my buck?
If anyone has an opinion about these things or if anyone HAS one, please post here.
Pics are below.

Ooh! Me want!
They're not very practical guns; kinda bulky and reloads are awkward, but they're fun range toys, for sure.
You do know that the barrels are interchangeable, right?

Yuppers!..........But I was just wanting ta know if I should maybe go ahead and get a blued model with a 6in barrel.
Cost is about the same.

Well, the 3" nickel gun is definitely the rarer of the two, if that's worth anything. (The bluing on mine is real purty, though; that pic I posted doesn't really do it justice...)
The 6" gun is pretty honkin' big; somewhere between an L- and an N-frame in size. I'd like to track down a 4" tube for mine...

Heh heh...........Yeah I've always wanted one.
I got just about everything else:uhoh:
But I hear that they are tack drivers........And the looks just knock me dead.
P.S. Yours is very purdy. :D

Sorry to pee on the roses here, I have shot one and handled more than one and while they are accurate (or shall we say as accurate as my Model 629) I was not impressed.
Heavy, awkward, fugly, not particularly finished well...on the other hand just sort of unique..
But then again, if ya got the money..

So Rally, buy it. Take lots of cool photos and email them to Tamara. Then offer to sell it to her at a reasonable profit....

Whatever bastes your turkey. Good thing they make all different kinds of guns, then, huh?. ;)
Personally, every time I pick mine up, I want to go retire replicants. :D

That thing is so ugly in such a cool way. I do believe I want one also. I didn't know they made short barrel Matebas. Me likey a lot.
Of course I like Porsche 928s too so apparently I have very little taste so take my opinion for what it is worth.

I just can't get over the looks of those things...maybe you have to shoot 'em to find their inner beauty.

Okay. I give up. How do you eject the empty cartridge cases and put in fresh rounds?
I saw a couple of those in a local gun shop, and figured they had to be $200 imports from Sri Lanka or somewhere.

The same way as with any other swing-out cylinder revolver.

It's just like a normal revolver in that sense.

Heavy, yes. It's a .44 Magnum!
Awkward, yes. But only until you shoot it, and then you see the benefits of it's unique design come through.
Fugly, um... let's go with the eye of the beholder thing.
Not particularly well finished... HUH? Every one I've seen has some of the best looking blueing I've seen and excellent fitting. The wood grips are really nice, as well. I think you must have seen a poorly cared for example or something.

Wow.
It looks like either Mateba saw the Japanese anime "Trigun $$60000000000 Man" (aka Vash the Stampede) or gun in the Japanese anime is based on the Mateba.
The commonality is that the barrel is aligned to the bottom of the cylinder.

I just got my tax return off, and I plan on spending some of my refund on a .44 mag 8" Mateba from CDNN...I think I'm going for the nickel, but I'm not certain. I've had this thing for auto-revolvers since I saw Zardoz...
I was wondering though, if the .357 has springs to convert it to .38 special, does the .44 have similar springs to convert it to .44 special? Also, would it be possible to have a smith rechamber/rebore a .44 cylinder and barrel to .45 Colt? I noticed that Corbon makes .45 Colt magnum +P rounds that might cycle the action....think it would work, or would the .44 special springs be a better idea (assuming they exist)?
BTW Frohickey, Vash the Stampede's gun is based on the Mateba. However, it's a break-action .45 Colt...

The gun in Trigun is almost completely different from the Mateba. The barrel alignment is the same, but thats it. Its like if you crossed a mateba with a schofield.
On the other hand a character in Ghost in the Shell actually carries one.

Yes Capt. Obvious, it *is* based on a Mateba crossed with a Schofield.
