The Greek rifles are, of course, US Garands, loaned by us to them, and returned.

Garand rifles lived a hard life, and most of them have been rebuilt at least once. When they are rebuilt, worn or broken parts are replaced. In US service, the replacement parts are US-made. In rifles that have seen foreign serivce, there may be non-US parts which may be sub-standard.

I love my Greek Rack Grade. It shoots about 4" prone at 100 yards, with Korean M2 ball. The stock is a little dinged up, but consistent in color. The firing pin broke within 200 rounds, but it was replaced for free by the CMP. I dont know how bad the throat erosion is, but it passes the "bullet in muzzle" test for muzzle erosion.

To my understanding, the Danish rifles were refurbished with local or Italian parts and barrels (if necessary), and those parts are supposedly very good quality; M1s with VAR barrels are well sought after. The Greeks, on the otherhand, didn't replace anything other than stocks, so some of the CMP Garands will have wider than normal stocks of odd color and questionable quality. Everything on mine is HRA, except for an Italian handguard and a few Springfield internals.

In the USGI only the Springfield is available and it is priced below the H&R, Winchester and IH. Are there practical differences or is it historical value or quantity that makes the SA price lower?

Is it worthwhile building/refurbishing any of the CMP items with new stock, barrel and all? Say the receivers? How much refurbishing requires gunsmithing? What would be the cost of the refurb? Would it be less than buying one already refurbished?

The SA is priced lower because there are more of them and they are slightly less collectible. If anything, there quality is better than the contracted guns.

Nothing wrong with the Greeks, just expect an ugly, but probably new, replacement stock. I handpicked mine from the store, I have a Greek Rack and a USGI rack. The Greek is actually in better condition, and it cost $100 less. Both are great shooters, the USGI one needed a $30 fix in the gas system though.
