I tried my friend's SW 5906 all stainless model last week. I was amazed by the accuracy and reliability. Anybody like SW third gen autos? Any pics?

Search by model number here on THR and you will find lots of feedback, the vast majority of it good.

Be careful if you buy one, though. They spontaneously multiply.

I love my 5906. It came from a special run back in 1988 IIRC with polished sides and unfortunately, rather ugly fake wood delrin grips which I immediately replaced with the traditional black ones. It has always been reliable and for me, an extremely comfortable shooter.

I bought a new 5906 in 1989 or 1990. I still have it today. I have grown "bored" with it many times, but I cannot bring myself to get rid of it because it does everything you could ask for.

It is very accurate and completely reliable. :)

Greetings All-

I just recently acquired a Smith N' Wesson compact model 6906, with
three standard capacity magazines all of which are LNIB for $235 OTD.
Don't think I went wrong, as it carries mighty well! :) :D

I gotta say that every S&W 59XX-series pistol I ever shot was very reliable and quite accurate (with some triggers being smoother than others).

'Course, they were *only* 9mms. ;)

Seriously, 3rd Generation S&W autoloaders are great. Mine are 10XX-series guns, but exhibit similar levels of reliability and accuracy - which is to say excellent.

FWIW, the several 4506 and 4566 guns I've handled and fired were likewise excellent. In fact, you could argue that their large-frame pistols in 10mm and .45acp were probably the best autos Smith ever made.

My "pinslayer", a fine tool for taking them OFF the table. I bought this 1076 back in the early 90's and it has more than earned it's place in my safe. I shoot it in a weekly match and it has had very little trouble over the last decade of shooting.

Proud owner of a 1026 and 645 both outstanding pistols!! The 645 will outshoot a Gold Cup and the 1026's double action is one of the smoothestout there! ;)

Opps! THIRD GEN. Guns! Sorry, I overstepped my bounds! Second Gen. guns aren't bad either but some say they are hit or miss! :p

I think the third generation S&W's are some of the best buys on the used handgun market atm. I have a 1076 and would like to pick up a 5906 or 4506.

Yep. I like 'em. My absolute favorite is my 6906. Keeping my eye peeled for a pristine 6946. Next favorite is an old, beat up (finish-wise) 5946.

S&W 4516. It's my 2nd favorite pistol (behind the G20). I carry it every day. It's a fantastic gun.

I recently chose a 4566TSW over

Sig P220
CZ 97B
Ruger P90
Glock 21
HK USP

I read great things about the 4566 from Doc Roberts and others on the Tactical Forums. Found a 4566 NIB for $399+tax, shipping & transfer fee ($460 out the door), and had to have it.

Shot it the first night I had it - 50 flawless rounds. Took it to my gunsmith, who:

1. performed a complete action job, reducing the trigger pull from 13/8 to 9/4.5. Very smooth and responsive trigger. And the reset is lightening quick - much quicker than my Sig.

2. polished the feed ramp and breech face into mirrors

3. recut the crown of the barrel for accuracy

4. installed Hogue rubber grips

5. painted my 3 dot sights flourescent

When I got it back from him, I installed a Harrts guide bar and extra power Wolff recoil spring, and took it to range.

100 WWB 230 gr rounds fed, fired and ejected. 6 ragged holes with a few flyers that were my fault. Very soft shooting weapon. Superb trigger - as good as it gets in TDA.

Love it. Too bad they discontinued the TSW line (except for the 4013 and 3913).

Great guns. I own a 1076 and really enjoy it. It is a great 10mm auto. The Delta that I own has a funky "twist" on the recoil with fully stoked loads. The 1076 is sweet to shoot.

The 6906 is great also. It is a perfect CCW package. I have owned mine for several years and can't find a pistol better for the job.

Anyone looking for a 4506 needs to call Vances Shooter's Supply in Columbus, OH. They have a bunch of police trade-ins in stock. $300.

I had one of these for years:

http://www.simpsonltd.com/Showroom/S&W/Autos/Z1015/Z1015A.jpg
S&W 4516-1

It was reliable - shot anything I fed it - & reasonably accurate for a short barreled .45ACP.

But as a carry pistol, it couldn't compete (IMO) with my 3" Kimber. The gun was heavy, & the grip was kinda like grabbing a 2x4. It wasn't anything I absolutely couldn't live with, but it just fell out of favor as a carry gun.

But - I thought well enough of it to sell it to a good friend a few years back, who still owns it & likes it.

I never owned a 4506, but..well....if it's good enough for Sonny Crocket... ;)

I own three 3rd Gen S&W semi-autos, all in .45ACP:

457
4516-1
4563TSW

They are all good guns, reliable and accurate. The all-steel 4516 is heavy but a very nice shooter. The other two have alloy frames and are much better for carry. I have replaced the factory grips on all three pistols with Hogue rubber grips, which offer a big improvement in handling and control. The Hogues fit perfectly and fill the hand much better than the original plastic grips.

One of the biggest mistakes Re guns I've made was not buying my duty 4586 for $250 when we went to new guns.

It was a great gun: Stainless steel, big fixed Novaks with tritium inserts, fully dehorned, beveled mag well, front strap serrations, undercut trigger guard, big grip tang for comfortable shooting, Big Bullets, Reliable 8rd Mags, etc.

Great Duty Gun.

Here is my latest find! This is one fine shooting, dependable little carry gun. I don't know what took me so long to figure this one out!

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v509/blckthree/3913Tactical.jpg

Someone got a little crazy polishing the slide, but the did remove the sharp edges so it is a fair trade off. One of the older 7 round magazine Tactical models.

Mike :)
