my sixteen yo stepson wants a charter 2000 bolt gun in 308, he found a new in the box stainless, synthetic for $275. any opinions to quality, will they shoot? , thanx 187

I have no experience with Charter 2000's rifles, but if they are anything like their Bulldog .44 Spl. revolver, DON'T BUY IT. I stupidly bought their new Bulldog (not the old Charter Arms Bulldog) in 2001. Boy, was I ever a sucker! It was very poorly made, the grips didn't fit together (they had a 1/4" gap), and the hammer wouldn't reliably detonate the primers on PMC ammo (although it did so with Blazer ammo).

IMO, tell your stepson to save his pennies and get a used name-brand rifle (Savage, Winchester, etc.).

Being the Spitefull A**hole that i am i will tell you that i am the sad owner of a Charter 2000 308....mine is the short one with the compensator.....it doesn't shoot worth a crap and before i even shot it i sent it back because it appeared that the bolt was too loose......they kept it forever and never returned one of my many calls and finally one day the Airborn Freight guy showed up with a long box....he was concerned since one end appeared to have busted open.....well guess what....it was my rifle minus the factory carton and all the paperwork you get with a new rifle.....i took the rifle out of the box and didn't even have to cut any tape.....if the bolt had not been at the other end of the box it would have been gone........Screw these people..........Dick

PS...this is my first post on the High Road but i was a long time poster on the Firing Line.......Sorry it was a rant.....Dick

thanks for the replys, i went and look at the rifle and nixed that idea quick. i have a friend who has a lightly used howa in 308 for $300, i think we'll buy that. 187
