Help Me Pick 2 Cartridges to Round Out the Collection

While trying to round out my shotgun and pistol collections--I traded in some rifles but not the scopes---I know I know---never trade----but anyway. So now I'm trying to figure out 2 calibers to round out the collection---so those 2 scopes can have a home.

Problem is--I'm going nuts trying to figure out what to get---so many choices<sigh>. I'm more interested in picking the cartridges than the specific rifles---but I'm open to all suggestions. I'm also trying to get different calibers but will consider a duplication if the rifle(or price) is right.

I currently have various rifles chambered in: .22lr---.22mag---7.62x39-----7.62x54-----.308-----.30-30----7mmMag----.338mag.

Scope #1: a Burris Fullfield II 4.5x14x40AO---Thinking about a cheaper rifle for this one like a Savage--Ruger or 700 ADL. Calibers I'm looking at .223---.22-250----.220Swift----.243----.25-06. But then again maybe a flat-top AR---hhhhmmm.

Scope #2: a Ziess Diavari-C 3x9x36---Thinking Browning--Sako---or Steyr(sp?) for this one. Calibers--.270--.30-06---.270WSM----.300WSM---7mmMag(maybe??--can get a great deal on a Steyr in this caliber)---.375H&H. Short mags have my interest---but then again---I don't know.

OK--I know this is all over place---but I'm looking for help with too many choices.

Thanks

OBG

You're light in the small-to-mid caliber range.

I suggest:

.250 Savage.

.223.

But then again maybe a flat-top AR---hhhhmmm.

Definitely an AR. Everyone should own at least one. Had I been thinking of that prior to 94 I'd have a pretty valuable collection.

well a scope does need a home after all. You can let a fine scope like the ziess just sit on the self. Well I would have to go with the browning in 270wsm. The reason for that is is has slightly better ballistics than the .270, shorter actio then the '06, doesn't kick like the 7mm. The 300wsm really has no real advantage except tht it is fairly new. Factory ammo for that cartrige is olny a few hundred fps faster than the 300mag. Also the .270 wsm is very accurate and has many bullet option. For the burris 25-06 with out a doubt. great on varmints when loaded light, great aond deer and antelope when load mid- to -hot. And lastly it is nice to have something that not everyone is shooting. No matter what you get on you list it is going to be great, because it is a new toy!!! good luk on your search

If I were in your shoes (hope they're 11s :p ) I'd probably get a 223 or 243 of some sort and a 6.5x55, 260 or 270.

My choices, considering budget, would be a Savage 12BVSS or Ruger 77VT in 243 and mount the Burris scope. The laminated stock may not lookthe part of a tactical rifle but is miles ahead of the flimsy synthetic stocks. If you don't like the stocks look, you can paint them pebbled black. An AR would serve nicely but I prefer bolt guns.

For the other, your choice of caliber, I'd take 6.5x55 or a 260 so I could use some of those awesome 139 Gr Lapua Scenar 6.5mm bullets. A Sako would be great but for less funds, a Tikka or an A Bolt . 260 or 270 would be just as good. Put that beautiful Diavari on it and I think you'll have a new favorite rifle before too long.

Think about a big bore. A .375H&H or bigger. Everyone needs at least one :)

Everyone also needs a .30-06, how about an M1 Garand?

Or a Remington 700 bolt action in .30-06.

I have one of each. Most gun owners have an '06 somewhere in their collection. Great for everything from varmits to moose depending on the load.

.243 Winchester, and a .375H&H or bigger.

You need a light medium and a Heavy! Heavy! to fill in the holes.

22-250 and 375 H&H.

You don't have a good dedicated varmit caliber. The 22 Magnum might do in a pinch. I'd not get the .243 as this is fairly close to the .308 in use although it will do a good job as a varmit caliber. The 6.5's are excellent but again, in the same class as the .308 essentially. There is a big gap that the 22-250 is right in the middle of. If you do want a .223, this would do a healthy job of filling that void also. I'd vote against the 220 Swift. I consider this overbore and it offers little over the 22-250.

The .375 is really the only step up you would want to do from a .338 in North America. It will take anything in Alaska and has the trajectory of 30-06. Recoil is mild in proportion to its power. I would suggest the Sako 75. It is a strong action, smooth and well-built. It is ballanced and holds its resale value. Trigger pull is good from the factory. You can't go wrong.

223 for the high power scope.
Take the Zeiss and put it on the 308 (my idea of an all around gun). Whatever is on the 308 you could put on a 25-06.

YMMV;)

"Great thing to have to do, filling a niche with a rifle or two!!!"

.223/AR-15 flat top/Burris & .45-70/Marlin 1895 full size/Zeiss...

You might consider trading the .338 Win.Mag for a .375 H&H.
Maybe the Zeiss could top the .375.

You've got a .308 - close enough for the .30-06 role.
The 7.62x54 is there, too.

Have fun with this project!

Another vote here for the AR-15. I agree everyone should own one. As for the second choice, for me it would be a toss up between the 25-06 and a .270 wsm. I own a .270 wsm, just haven't got the chance to shoot it yet.:( But be warned, I've had a hard time finding ammo for the .270 wsm(had to have it ordered), and if you're looking for a Win Mod 70 they seem to be hard to come buy also.

If you're really interested in the .270 wsm I'd suggest checking out www.shortmags.org/shortmags there's a lot of good information there.

In the less than 30 range I recommend 250 Savage.

In the over 30 range I recommend 338/06. (now being loaded commercially)

In the less than 30 range I recommend 250 Savage.Oh, RATS!!! Can I change my answer. The 250 Savage just sounds so juicy. Reason I didn't buy it long ago was that I needed another shell-holder. Settled for the .243 and didn't look back. Then I bought the 22-250 die set that included the shellholder I'd need. Hmmmmm.... Does that new Ruger Lightweight rifle come in 250 Savage?

Hmmm, I just got through with my "Mouse to M'bogo" hunting rifle collection and added two CZ 550s in the last few months. I have a FS (full stock) is in 6.5x55 Swede for hunting wooded areas and my "chipmunk" gun is a Safari Magnum in .375 H&H. You never know when you may have to stop a full blown chipmunk charge :what:!

If not hunting rifles, go military and add an AR15 of some persuasion and a .308 main battle rifle like a FAL, G3, or M1A.

You need two Mauser-based actions - one in 7x57 and one in .243.

How about a 17 HMR for the Burris. Nice inexpensive bolt action CZ452 in these shoot great. Useful on small critters to 200 yards and accuracy to make it worthwhile. A fun gun you can shoot cheaply and often.

If the rimfire doesn't do it for you, then you are screaming for a 22-250. Savage will work fine as will a Rem 700 ADL.

For the other scope, how about a 260 Rem. in a Sako or maybe a Kimber 84.

Ahh, so many choices. If it were me, I'd go with a .243 and .375 H & H. Or maybe a .25-06 and a .416 Rigby...

Go for something in the 6.5/.264 caliber: 6.5x55 Swede/AI, 6.5x284(AI), or .260 Remington/AI

Go for a .30/06 and a .375 H&H.

Both cartridges are commonly available both here and in Africa. The .30/06 is easily adequate to hunt leopard and all thin-skinned, non-dangerous game worldwide with the possible exceptions of giraffe and eland; The .375 will do for everything else.

6.5 Swede (6.5x55) Everyone needs one :D

And if you're really having a problem picking one out, I'll do you a favor and take that scope off your hadns. Heck, I won't even charge you :neener: (What are friends for!)

Try a .260 Remington. That little cartridge has intrigued me. My next bolt rifle will probably be a Model 7, synthetic stock, in .260 Remington.

You are light in the sub-.30 cal guns it seems. If you don't want a .260, how about a .257 Roberts, .250 Savage, or maybe a good used .264 Win mag? Guess it all depends on what you want to us it for, but if I were rounding out the collection you have, those are the calibers I'd be looking at.

I'm very fond of the .257 Roberts. Or, if I didn't already have the .257, I'd be looking hard for a classic Savage 99 in .250-3000.

Bigger bore? In the past two years, I've acquired .45-70, .35 Whelen, and .375 H&H. Can't decide which is my favorite. I guess it depends on the task at hand. :p

Best,
Johnny

I think you need a 250 Savage and a 45/70 to top off the list.I have both and love them both. I think my next one will be a 6.5x55 Swedish.

Hey Badger Arms, Ruger doesn't currently make a .250 Savage :( , but the did make the M77 RSI (international) in .250 Savage not too many years ago. A collector here in town has one NIB. I would love to get my hands on that rifle one of these days.

Whoo-ee!!

Nothing like spending other people's money, eh guys? :D

Middle of the road round huh? Anyway, if you don't already own it, get an AR. Pain in the butt to clean. But fun/accurate. If you do own one, even better. Get yourself some new uppers.

Come now:
.223/5.56
6.8 SPC
.243 Win
7.58x39
.300 Whisper/Fireball
.458 SOCOM
6.5 Grendel
.50 Beowulf

IMO Build/order the lower. RRA. Decide on the upper and order direct from the manufacturer.

If you need someone local to talk to, or get parts for the lower call Arms and Ammo 402-727-1401. Ask for Ed or Berry. (Or Jeff, but he's usually not around) Tell them Bryan mentioned them. They're kind of short on parts at the moment. But they are decent locals that know brown guns and EBR's.
