Well, I just got back this morning from the CMP north store with my new M1 Garand. For those of you who haven't visited the North Store, do it. It's a great place with great people, and all those '03s and M1s lined up just call out your name.

That being said, I'm now in the process of cleaning up this old war horse. I've got it all figured out, but since I rather stupidly forgot to buy the detailed disassembly guide, I'm stuck on one part. I need to remove the foremost handguard (as in the one right behind the front sight), since I can see a giant glob of cosmo right underneath it. The manual that came from the CMP doesn't say anything about how to remove this piece, and I really don't want to mess something up.

Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks!

You have to remove the gas cylinder and front sight assembly.

Remove the gas cylinder lock screw, unscrew and remove the gas cylinder.
Pull the gas cylinder off the barrel.
The hand guard slides off.

WARNING: Get some good instructions beefore attempting to remove the rear handguard. These can be broken if improper removal or installation is attempted.

Here's a link to online M1 GI manuals:
