Dixie Chick Explains Bush Slam At London Concert
Maines Said She Was 'Ashamed' President Was From Texas
POSTED: 9:59 a.m. EST March 13, 2003
One of the Dixie Chicks is clarifying remarks she made about President George W. Bush during a concert in London earlier this week.
Reporting on a Chicks' concert, the Web site for the United Kingdom paper The Guardian said singer Natalie Maines (pictured, center) told the crowd, "Just so you know, we're ashamed the president of the United States is from Texas."
The singer's barb got the audience cheering, the Guardian said.
In a statement on the Chicks' Web site Wednesday, Maines said, "We've been overseas for several weeks and have been reading and following the news accounts of our government's position. The anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding."
The country trio -- consisting of Maines, Martie Maguire and Emily Robinson -- are all from Texas.
"I feel the president is ignoring the opinions of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world," Maines said in the statement. "My comments were made in frustration and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."
And while Maines maintains her beef with Bush, she's much more supportive of the United States troops.
"While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost," Maines said.
Whether Maines expresses her feelings about Bush on the group's North American leg of their Top of the World tour is yet to be heard. If she does, it will be in front of a lot of people.
According to music site Lauch, the group sold out 51 out of the 59 arenas in one day on March 1, which amounted to over 867,000 tickets.
The group recently won four Grammy awards including Best Country Album for their smash album "Home."

Although I don't agree much with some of the things Bush has done since becoming president, I am quite proud of the fact he is from Texas.
If these pea brained chics are really from Texas then they ought to have their citizenship revoked.

I "pay" them to sing, and so they do.

When it comes to the Dixie Chicks, I don't give a hoot about their politics, their look, or their attitudes.
I just love their music. Their most current album is a masterpiece of country blue grass.
I would listen with bliss to them no matter what their opinions.
I word to the wise to the artist from a consumer. Just create, keep your opinions to yourself, and let your art do the talking. Keep your mouth shut and shun the media.

This is REALLY disheartening.
The Chicks are, by far, my favorite C&W group.
They've done something that I didn't think anyone could do for me -- make me like each successive album more than the one before it.
Sorry, Skunk, but Home is probably one of the best C&W albums of the past 25 years.
Landslide far better than the original, and the title track is mindblowing.
The Chicks are taking AMAZING amounts of heat on the bulletin board for the top C&W station in the Washington, DC, metro area.
Some support, too, as would be expected.

Mike Irwin,
Oh, I have to agree. "Home" is probably the best blue grass country album ever. I listen to it over and over, and I wish artists would just create and not opinionate. No matter, this work of art transcends any other concern.
Got to agree, the Dixie Chicks rendition of "Landslide" puts the Stevie Nicks version as second place, a phenom, as the song is very personal to Stevie (about her father). The Chicks are something special to be sure. Hey, you have to admire them, they took on Sony, and all artists hopefully will benefit.
I just love the Dixie Chicks. Gosh they really are so very talented. Good lookin women as well!

The original comment shows a lack of …???… mental quality, given the location and context within which it was made. The follow-up statement clarified that was meant, was exactly what was said, and verified that lack of mental quality.
I find the harmony in their vocals commonly produces a strange sound combination that is flat, a little nasal, monotone and irritating, all at the same time. They have the ablity to hit just-that-certain- sound-resonance, that make me fear for the circuits of electrical devices I have on in the area near the radio. You DC fans know what I'm talking about.
I like a great deal of the music my cohorts at work play but the DCs and that nasal harmony of theirs is an exception.
If they stay in Europe, who will notice? Politically they'll fit-in well.

Yet the boycott of S&W is on because its present owners haven't repudiated its previoius owners' submitted to Clinton's buggery.

Selfdfenz,
Correct as you noticed that unique female nasal harmony is reminiscent of the Barbershop music of the "Sweet Adeline's". The Dixie Chicks adopt those unique harmonies. So special. So dreamy. So talented.
The Dixie Chicks are really unique and they are so smart and I reject anyone that calls them "twits". These girls are a special art form. I am glad that there are other THRs that recognize this talent.

Loved them before, really love them now. Some of the hottest new bluegrass around. If I had ever played my banjo that well, I'd have never worked another day in my life...
But best bluegrass album ever? Please! Not as long as Del McCoury, Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Ricky Scaggs, Bela Fleck, Laurie Lewis, Jerry Douglas, Sally Van Meter, Herb Pederson, Dave Grisman, [I could go on and on] are still around. And not as long as I can still throw "Best of Flatt and Scruggs" in the old CD player...

Best C&W album? Maybe, I haven't bought a C&W album in a while. Don't get me wrong, I have a crapload of respect for Emily Robison. When's the last time you saw a banjo picker (Steve Martin and John Lithgow don't count) on a billboard? Or heard them on a country station that, pre-Dixie Chicks, quipped "No twanging banjos or screeching fiddles!", or on pop stations? Emily's opened the banjo up to an entirely new market, something that the banjo community should be thankful for.
But best Bluegrass album? Not even close. Right now, Ricky Skaggs is in the CD player. Flatt & Scruggs still rule.
I'm still surprised 'Oh Brother, Where Art Thou' won all those awards. Not that the music wasn't good, just everything on there has been around for what....60 years? And it took George Clooney lip syncing (sp?) over Dan Tyminski to get the media attention that pushed it to the top  On a more positive note, I'm glad Alison Brown brought home best country instrumental. She's an incredible musician as well as a very nice and down to earth lady.
Am I the only one that changes the station on 'Landslide'? The only song I hate more than that on the radio is that Coldplay song. IMO Traveling Soldier and Long Time Gone EACH would have made the album worth the price tag alone, but I was just disappointed they lacked the punch of the radio cuts.

bad dad brad,

Get Alison Brown's 'Fair Weather'. You won't be disappointed. Awesome guest vocalists like Claire Lynch, Tim O'Brien--The Dixie Chicks performs one of his toucheyfeelie songs on Home as well as Nickle Creek's top airtime grabber. Vince Gill sings and plays some mean guitar. Also chock-full of other world-class bluegrass pickers like Fleck, Douglas, Bush (Sam, not George), Grier, etc.
She's an incredibly nice lady, and beautiful in a classy way. I'm not into the Dixie Chicks bluegrass girl look, I guess.
The Deep Gap, her guitar instrumental is IMO the BEST bluegrass instrumental ever, and I do NOT say that lightly.
And nothing like falling alseep to Alison Krauss but I prefer her earlier stuff.

Alisson Kraus is great. The first time I heard Laurie Lewis on the radio a friend said, "Who's that??!!" I said, "I don't know, but I want to marry her." Just a heartbreakingly beautiful voice.
The Good Ole Persons started out as an all girl group back in the 70s in the Bay Area with Laurie Lewis, Kathy Kallick (sp?) and Sally Van Meter, among others I forget. Also, there was a great N Cal group around a few years ago called the "All Girl Boys." They were...well, better than I'll ever be.
Have to agree with the Skunk in that I have no use for Landslide. Love the rest of the CD, but I just skip past that one.

I think it was Natalie, might have been one of the others in the trio, that criticized Toby Keith for his song about 9-11 saying it made C&W look like a bunch of rednecks or words to that effect. This was after "Earl's Gotta Die" or whatever the name was. The Chicks have been doing some crossover in their audience but the base is still the C&W crowd and most of that crowd don't cotton to bad mouthing the Pres in front of a foreign audience. Whether this was meant to curry favor, energize the audience or a honest expression of conscience, they will lose a lot of their base. Maybe they have been rubbing elbows too much with the anointed Hollywood left at all the after awards parties.

Natalie Maines was also on Politically Incorrect with Bill Maher a couple of years back, ragging on some poor guy who had had, like, 9 operations for some rare form of cancer before his 14th birthday and had been arrested and jailed at about age 24 for growing his own medicine (marijuana).
It was the ONLY thing that would allow him to keep his appetite up (he had tried Marinol to no avail) and still take all the meds/chemo etc. he had to take to keep his illness in remission.
She was a D.A.R.E. Poster Chile.
Her comments were, sadly, riotously out of touch with the issue being discussed.

No way; especially the live version of Stevie's they play on the radio here. I can feel the emotion in either of Stevie's versions (studio or live). All I hear in the Twits' version is technique.

Silver,
And all I can hear in Stevie Nix's versions (of any of her songs...) is a voice that sounds like a frog dragging logging chains through a blender with a chorus of Satanic cats thrown in for bad measure.
And that's on a good day.
Most of the time she sounds worse...

This is sad. I was one of the fans. Natalie brought DC's to life. She can wail with the best. Just a bit nasal. Not up to Alison Krauss or Patty Loveless though. I wonder if the other chicks are happy with their spokeswoman?

ROFLMAO!
Nah, Stevie's voice isn't that bad, but I really don't care for it at all.
I never could get into the "gravely" voices -- her and Joplin are two good examples.
I like the clear, ringing voices. And Natalie Maines has that in spades, as does Alison Krauss. Debbie Harry had that kind of voice until she blew it on hash, pot, and coke.
I just heard "The Lucky One" by Alison Krauss for the first time the other day. It's a perfect showcase for the kind of voice I'm talking about.
And, if you've never heard it, try listening to "I'll Fly Away" by Krauss and Gillian Welch.

Skunkabilly,
I will check out Alison Brown this weekend (if I can find it this cookie cutter town I live in). Thanks.
As far as Alison Krauss goes, I share your sentiment. My favorite album of hers is a sort of best off called "Now That I've Found You." A somewhat recent album I like is "So Long So Wrong." Her early stuff is really pure blue grass.
Alison Krauss was only 17 when she sang "Sleep On" and I am just blown away by her sophisticated voice at such a young age. She is from Champaign IL, just a hop skip and jump from my abode. I would like to see one of her concerts someday.

Brad, Alison owns her own record label at www.compassrecords.com you can order straight from her.
I like Krauss but her newer stuff is too serious for me.
I'll be popping in the old Charlie Daniels CDs again. One of my early influences that got me picking banjo and helped turn me into what I am.
I wonder what Emily and Martie think? I still may pick up their older albums though I don't like the new one that much. Emily's Dobro on the first album is awesome. She can PICK.
I'm trying to find their albums that had some traditional Irish stuff (pre-Natalie stuff is more Irish and Bluegrass than country) but I can't find any of them.
