NRA pledges $1M to GMU law school

The National Rifle Association Foundation has pledged $1 million to the George Mason University School of Law to establish and endow the Patrick Henry Professorship of Constitutional Law and the Second Amendment.
"We are proud to launch this pioneering effort as part of NRA's long-standing commitment to educating the public about the Second Amendment," said Wayne LaPierre Jr., NRA's executive vice president. "We believe that academic study at a top-tier law school will both enhance scholarly research conducted to date on this topic and increase the public's understanding of the history of this key civil rights issue."
"This professorship will be dedicated to exploring the ideas and impact of the Second Amendment," said George Mason President Alan G. Merten. "The ability to think critically is the traditional goal of a college education and has never been more crucial. Private support has made a critical difference in helping to fund faculty chairs and professorships throughout the university, enabling us to attract the best and brightest minds. The appointment of an eminent scholar to this professorship will stimulate timely debate on important constitutional issues."
The new professorship will be filled by Nelson Lund, professor of law at George Mason and a nationally recognized expert on constitutional law. Lund, a graduate of St. John's College in Annapolis, holds advanced degrees in philosophy from the Catholic University of America, in political science from Harvard and in law from the University of Chicago.
Lest anyone think this is no big deal, consider how very little many Americans know about the Second Amendment and the far-reaching words that say, "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed."
Such self-styled constitutional "experts" as Rosie O'Donnell and heaven only knows how many Left Coast entertainers who believe that once they appear on the theater or TV screen they have a duty to tell us how to live our lives and interpret the Constitution for us, need to be reminded just how important the Second Amendment is. Most of all, they need to learn that if you urge citizens to ignore one amendment to the Constitution, pretty soon someone else will want to ignore another — maybe the First Amendment, the right of free speech and assembly?
Think about it.
