Is the SA ammo any good?

Range reviews would be welcome!

Thanks

My rifles seem to like it. No complaints.

It's some of the good stuff. I've never heard anything bad about SA 7.62 on any forum.

I'd agree, good stuff. My range review.... Removed a loaded mag from the ammo can, inserted mag into mag well, let the CH fly, moved selector to fire, pulled trigger, rifle went bang, Tide bottle jumped. Repeated the trigger pull 19 times, then started the process over again.... :)

Nelson - no range review/info - mainly cos have never used this for real long range precision. Used however in FAL - excellent - no complaints at all. I am happy if I can get SA .308, Australian .308 or even the Portugese. I have no bad experiences with any of those.

South African is among the most sought after milsurp out there.
It's gotten much tougher to find over the past several years, also.

Works flawlessly in any CETME, FAL, or M1A i've shot it out of. And it's very accurate out of any of my bolt guns assuming I do my job.

I used it as issue ammo for several years in South Africa. Good stuff - high quality control standards in manufacturing, stored under fairly good conditions, not abused or left out in the cold.

From personal experience, I've found the surplus 7.62x51 to go like this, in order from best to worst.

Hirtenberger (sp?)
Lake City
Santa Barbara/ Portuguese (tied)
South African
Argentine
Indian

I find SA every bit as good as the Port that I have. My DSA StG like it better

Just as good as all the rest of the nato surplus.

Does anyone besides AIM have this ammo now(Aim won't ship to me)?

I found that there was a difference in accuracy between '79 and '81 SA.
The '79 SA grouped larger, and seemed to have more fliers.
The '81 I like. Seems more consistent, but has the occasional flyer.

My new PTR-91 loves the South African ammunition.
It chokes on Hirtenberger but groups it quite decently, I think the thicker brass in the Hirtenberger stuff causes the extraction troubles I have encountered in my PTR-91.
It is the only ammunition that does this so far.
