If so, we'd like to talk knives with you...

Or, with anyone else interested in 'Randall Made' knives for that matter...

Sheldon and Edna,

Got a couple. Not like yourselves tho'.

My uncles carried #1's over in SEA back in 65 and got my Dad and me interested (never seen a sheath turn green before).

Only got a couple of 1's, some 2's, an 11, a triathlete and a little bitty 10 (kinda pricy for ground stainless, but it DOES say Randall).

The local cutlery dealer (Blanchards Cutlery in LV) carries them when they can get them and call me when they get some, but I seem to gravitate towards the 1's and 2's mostly... beautiful blades.

I'd say between Dad's and my small collection we have approx 14 now, with more to come I'm sure.

Adios

Got a 2 and an 18. Always wanted more, but when I had the ability, didn't have the money, or vice versa...

I second Chris Reeves. Got a South African Jereboam I (no saw teeth, octagonal cap).

I've got a 14 that my folks gave me in '77 before I went off to wear the green clothes. Since then I've picked up a 16, a 5-4, an 8-4, a Smith & a large Toothpick. Currently have a 5-6 on order. Yeah, I guess I'd have to own up to being a collector.:D

Well, a little history here to clarify before I go on then...

First and foremost, I'm a shooting enthusiast...and have been for around 20 years now. The main focus being on .223 and .308 rifles, and pistols chambered in 9mm and .45 ACP.

Unfortunately, the 'political climate' here currently doesn't lend itself well to free range shooting of said weapons. As such, my wife Edna and I have taken up knife collecting in the mean time...

To that end, we've been collecting 'Randall Made' knives (RMK), Al Mar knives (AMK), and Applegate/Fairbairn 'Fighting Knives' for a few years now...

Being that there is very little useful information in print on these knives, we're researching and documenting them from a historical perspective. We're also publishing our findings in the KnifeForums.com hardcopy magazine.

That said, to date we've submitted a seven part series on dating RMK's via their various characteristics over the years, the last of which will be published in the April issue of 'KnifeForums, the magazine'.

(This is not a plug for KFC, just a FYI for those interested in obtaining the back issues, or having access to the information provided).

Yes, we did our homework prior to submittal for print, in excess of 1000 hours research, numerous emails and phone calls, and pre-print 'proofing' by many of the known stalwarts of RMK collecting. At this point, I think we're pretty close with our dates and info.

So now, we'd like to share what we know, here, with those interested in sharing too. We can't, won't, be put in a position where we come across as psuedo-experts...we're simply enthusiast's that like to discuss knives, just like you.

As part of the sharing of information, we'll tell you what we know, to the best of our ability, with no 'airs'. We're like minded hobbiest/enthusiast's here, and information should be shared, we'd ask that you do the same.

Ours is still a 'work in progess', so actual dates of purchase, as confirmed by original ordering/ownership, or receipt, or by other means of 'knowing for sure', will be the most desireable forms of providing accurate info on your part.

Anyhoo, that's the background, so let's talk knives... ;)

Welcome to THR, Sheldon and Edna.

OBTW, THR member hso is the knife guru on this site. You might want to look him up.;)

I'm not a collector, but more of a person who's interested. I bought my buddy a Model 1 (w/ stag handle) from AG Russell and it was a beautiful piece!

I have a Model 14 on order with RMK but it's not due to arrive until 2005. :( I prefer single hilt (#3 nickel silver was ordered for the aforementioned Model 14), single finger grip (my hands are too small for RMK's standard finger groove grip) and nickel silver accents so I had to order from RMK instead of going through a dealer like Russell.

One poster on knifeforums.com mentioned that he puts in an order with RMK every year on his birthday. That way he never is more than a year away from getting a new RMK. I can't afford that kind of practice but it's a solution! :)

We appreciate the responses, and are happy to find fellow RMK collector/user/enthusiast's here!

We'll have more to add later, but we're currently busy putting together a RMK 'Timeline', a quick reference guide for dating RMK's over the years by their various characteristics. It's been quite the little project so far... ;)

We're hoping to go to print by Friday, then off to FLA for a 'quad fold laminate'...'God willing and the creek don't rise', these should be ready by the OKCA show next month... 'Film at 11'

Looking forward to spending more time here soon, and happy to hear about your acquisitions...they sound like some cool knives for sure!

'Hasta,

Thanks Schuey, but as I often tell Sheldon and our coworkers at "the largest stealth corporation on the planet", "If I'm your idea of an expert we're all in trouble!". I just try to keep the misinformation level to a minimum.

Sheldon,

I've got a couple of Randalls as well.
Model 25 "The Trapper" 5" (dated to Bo)
Model 10 "Salt fisherman" 3" (my first)
Model 18 "Attack and Survival" 7.5"
Randall Thrower

I intend to get one of the Astronauts and a Toothpick one day.

I'll be looking forward to your article.

BTW I've got one of the A2 Applegates from Blackjack and one of the sub-100 Applegates from Boker as well as the Al Mar practice Applegates if you need pictures.

I have a Randall baseball cap around here someplace from when hso took me to visit the shop while we were in Orlando for SHOT. Does that count? :o
