Hello,
I just bought a Marlin 980V bolt action in .22 to work on my off hand shooting. For those of you not familiar with it, it is a heavy barrel bolt action with a pretty much full sized stock. I suspect that it is a lot more accurate than I am, but I am having a problem with the scope slipping forward.

I bought a Simmons scope intended for .22's. It clamps onto the grooves in the receiver, with big finger tightenable screws. I have it tightened down pretty good, but the scope still slides forward after I have been shooting for a while. Not too much, but annoying. The scope is not moving in the rings, the rings are sliding on the receiver.

Any suggestions on how to keep this from happening? I would prefer not to weld/solder/or JB Weld the rings in place.

Sounds like "hand tight" is not tight enough. (Not surprised either.) If there are slots, then use a screwdriver. Or use pliers padded with leather to avoid scarring. Or replace the rings with another brand allowing use of screwdriver.

Get a set of Weaver rings. Weavers have a steel clamping foot that is slightly serated. It grips the reciver grooves like no other ring designed for the 3/8" grooved receivers . Weaver "tip-off" .22 rings will not slip or walk even under fairly moderate recoil. Available through Brownells for about $20.

Thanks for the information. I'll try cranking down on the screws. I guess I can't hurt the receiver, so if I mangle the rings and have to get better ones, that will be a solution right there.

If the scope were moving forward or backward in the rings, you could add two or three small pieces of double-sided tape to the scope under the rings. That wasn't an altogether uncommon problem years ago, although I haven't seen or heard of it recently.

BKL and maybe others make an adapter that fits the tip off 22 groove and allows weaver style scope rings. It clamps onto the receiver much tighter than the rings you're using and will fix your problem.
