I was just wondering out of curiousity if this can be done with out changing the cylinder or could you just drop it in like .357/.38special?

No....the .45 acp headspaces on the case mouth. If you dropped it into a .45 colt chamber, it would go down too far for the firing pin to reach it. However, the cylinder could be modified on a D/A .45 colt revolver, so that it could use half or full moonclips, and therefore shoot both.

Just as soon as you swap the 45COLT cylinder for their 45ACP cylinder.
The cartridge chamber specs are totally different so you must use the the appropriate one for the cartridge you wish to shoot.

My Ruger Blackhawk has a .45 LC cylinder and a .45 ACP cylinder. Its very accurate with both and has a quick cylinder change. The two cartridges are completely different other than having the same bullet diameter.

Domino has the revolver I have pondered over many times.. The 45ACP/45LC model Blackhawk.
I hear it is a really good one too.
