San Antonio DJ Pulls The Plug On The Dixie Chicks

A popular country music group has some San Antonians turning off their radios. A KJ 97 DJ pulled the plug on the trio's songs after lead singer Natalie Maines made a negative comment about President Bush.

The trio is on tour overseas, but they're causing quite a stir back here at home.

"Natalie Maines before a concert audience in London, England said, and I quote, ‘Just so you know, we're ashamed the President of the United States is from Texas,’" said Keith Montgomery with KJ 97.

The comments prompted Montgomery to pull the Chicks music off the air Thursday

"I would say the reaction is 99 percent in favor of what I have done," said Montgomery.

Texans aren't the only ones upset about Maine's comments. Reaction from all over the country caused the group on Thursday to post an explanation of their stance. The group released a statement Thursday saying they have been overseas for several weeks and "the anti-American sentiment that has unfolded here is astounding. While we support our troops, there is nothing more frightening than the notion of going to war with Iraq and the prospect of all the innocent lives that will be lost."

In a separate statement Thursday, Maines said, "I feel the president is ignoring the opinion of many in the U.S. and alienating the rest of the world. My comments were made in frustration, and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view."

But in the process of putting their opinion out there, they're losing support. Angry phone calls flooded radio stations across the country Thursday, calling for a boycott of the Texas trio's music.

The Dixie Chicks will kick off a U.S. tour in support of their multi-platinum album "Home" on May 1 in Greenville, South Carolina. The group's hits include "Wide Open Spaces," "Ready to Run" and "Landslide." The Dixie Chicks are coming to San Antonio in July.

Montgomery says, after hearing from more listeners, he'll decide on Friday whether to play their music on his show.

I'm soooo glad that this guy quit playing their music!
I only wish the Dixie Twits were home so that they could take their lumps.

All the C&W stations in the KC area, are up in arms about it. You couldn't get a "Dixie Chickens" song played around here, if your life depended on it. They're even having rallies where you can bring in your personal Dixie Chicken CD's, tapes, etc., and participate in a mass "Chicken burning".

Shore don't break MY itty-bitty heart. :p

and one of the privileges of being an American is you are free to voice your own point of view.

Yep. And you get to be held accountable to them too.

"Privileges".

A basic understanding of the nature of a 'right', how it differs from a 'privilege' and how our system of government handles the two is something every American child should learn in school.

I know I sure didn't learn it there.

- Gabe

PS: Amen, Skunk. The 'held accountable' part is the part plenty of people just don't get.

It ain't a privilege, lady -- it's a right.

Another one of the rights that free people exercise is the right to buy whatever products they wish, from whatever source they wish, for whatever reason they wish.

The American people are tired of liars and people who pretend to be something theyre not. -- Hillary Clinton, in the 1992 "60 Minutes" interview

Although I don't listen to their music, there are a lot of folks who like their stuff. Obviously they are out of touch with the people who buy their recordings(patriotic, god fearin', flag wavin' etc.). I think it will come back to bite them in the a**. Maybe they can book a concert tour in the middle east where their views will be even more well-received!

Talk about career-killers! What C&W group's manager would let any member say something like that?

Has there ever been a big-name country artist who came down against a president or a war? Well, I mean, other than against Clinton...

Houston's country radio stations just did the same thing.

Yup, just noticed that on the drive home. Wonder if our lame top 40's station that also plays the Chicks will do the same? Doubt it.

JesseH, has that Toby Keith 'Taliban' song aired in your area or was that a live-only thing? :D

The Dixie Chicks should keep their mouths shut unless they are singing. I love their music, and just try to ignore their politics.

What is it with celebs that think, just because they are talented, that they can shoot their mouth off at a concert, at a press conference, etc? We all shoot our mouths off, but keep it private please. I don't care about your politics.

When I pay to see a concert, I don't want to hear politics, I just want to hear you sing Natalie!

Ho-hum.

Never liked their music. Can't sya I'm surprised that they would say something like that. Best that could happen is that their albumn sales flounder and people write to their record company letting them know why sales are slumping. Get them in the pocket book.

Has anyone out there ever heard how C&W music sounds when sung in ARABIC?
Do they even have RADIOS in the desert?
Maybe the CHICKS could get together with HANOI JANE & BABS and do a concert for the ENEMY!
We could all pool our money and buy front row seats for SADAM & OSAMA and as a special treat to top off the concert we could have a special appearance by the B52s!
And a great time would be had by ALL!

A radio station in Dallas is doing the same thing. They're waiting on feedback from the listeners before they dump 'em permanently, but no play for now.

El Tejon,

Just because someone wasn't born in Texas doesn't mean they aren't a Texan. I wasn't born there and I no longer live there, but I AM a Texan. It's a state of mind.
