I am thinking of buying a revolver and I was reading some of the threads about changing cylinders. how much can you change? Can you change a 45 colt to a regular 45 auto or gap ect? thanks

as long as the case shape and size is the same, you could use the same cylender, but you'd need moonclips because it's a rebated rim cartridge.

Welcome to the world of wheel guns!
Thanks also for a new word "revolverer"! I had no idea that I am a revolverer!
Most guns are chambered for one size. There are a few exceptions with revolvers (.22s .22l .22lr and .22 magnums; .357 and .38; .44Spc and .44mag) but even with them there are really strict rules so that things don't go bang in your face!
In my humble opinion, trying to find a revolver capable of accepting multi-chambers is very limiting. But more importantly, one of the rules of being a revolverer is that you MUST have different style revolvers. For example, the law requires you to own a Ruger Single Six .22, a S&W .357/.38 and a Colt .45 just as starters. That is the law. You can look it up!

"Revolverer"... I like it! Thanks for a new descriptive word! :D
As for cartridge interchangeability, there are several combinations that work, or you could go with something like a Ruger Blackhawk that comes with two different cylinders. A few examples:
Cartridges that can be interchanged in a cylinder for the last round listed:
.38 Special / .357 Magnum
.44 Russian / .44 Special / .44 Magnum
.45 Colt / .454 Casull
Interchangeable cylinder combo's available for Ruger Blackhawks:
.45 Colt / .45 ACP
.357 Magnum / 9mm. Parabellum
Hope this helps.

is a 45 acp the same as a 45 auto?

Yup. But be careful, there are a dozen .45 caliber cartridges out there that I know of and there maybe more. For example, the .45 ACP is different than the .45 Colt and now Glock has thrown us the .45 GAP. Seems like some people love to reinvent the wheel!
