Hello Everyone,

While I was at the SHOT Show I spoke with the respresentatives of Gemtech (Gemini Technologies) about their suppressors and their uses. I also handled several of their models and thumbed through their catalog. I left immensely impressed. They were by far the most friendly, professional, and best informed booth I visited at the show. The suppressors also appeared to be of the highest quality.

Long story short...I want one for my full sized 1911 and an integral design for a Ruger MKII in .22 LR. I own a large tract of land and would like it for dispatching rabid animals and perhaps use for home defense for tactical reasons (e.g., muzzle flash and blast). I'd like to be able to fire the suppressor equipped 1911 without hearing protection in an enclosed space (e.g., a home).

After a little more research I discovered that there are several other players in this niche market. Names like AWC, AAC, Knight Manufacturing, etc. Most of these companies charge noticeably more than Gemtech. As I am rather new to suppressor technology I am looking for experienced opinions.

Who makes the best suppressors on the market today?

If it isn't Gemtech, what makes their suppressors inferior to the more expensive ones on the market?

Any special pointers I should watch out for while shopping for one.

Any experienced opinions are welcome.

Thank you for your assistance.

If it's legal where you live, I'd do it.

I'm pretty new to suppressors myself, but I'm planning to get one of the Impuls II-A suppressors from CCF/Swiss Inc. for my USP .45 Compact. They seem to have a good reputation at HKPro from people who have them.

Does anyone actually own and/or use suppressors of any kind?

Dont the 1911 type pistols, or those with that type barrel have some issues as to reliabilty and function when suppressors are attached?

I have a stainless Walther PPK with a Ciener suppressor. It is a little over 10 years old, so the newer technologies have surpassed it and probably a little quieter. It still functions perfectly and has a few thousand rounds fired through it.

The 1911 with a suppressor caused the gun to not rack the slide after firing. The suppressor removed enough energy that there was not enough to push the slide back and eject the casing. Of course, that can be seen as a benefit because it makes the combination very quiet. On 9mm handguns, they actually added a slide lock to get the same benefit.

Sorry, but can't recommend any .45 suppressor since I haven't had one to play with.
