View Full Version : Would you ... ?

Would you buy a gun that you weren't planning to use for self defense (because you already own a couple of guns which are better suited for that) and not use it for plicking (because it really isn't meant for that either) and you're not a collector (so you wouldn't be buying it to add to a collection)?

In other words, would you buy a gun if you had no reason for buying it?

The reason why I ask is because the Walther PPK keeps calling me :D

I don't consider myself a collector because each of my guns was purchased with a specific purpose in my. You really don't go plicking with a PPK and I already own a few guns better suited for self defense purposes (i.e., my MK9 is about the same size as the PPK but it shoots 9mm's). Yet, it keeps calling me :)

Have you ever purchased a gun that you didn't have a reason for getting?

Greeting's FUD,

I'm not a collector of anything other than MONEY!
With it, I have become a Cumilator of guns.
I've been known to buy on pulse; most
anything that I want, including guns that I had
NO NEED for!*

*FootNote- At least that is the way my wife views
the subject. (Laughing REAL LOUD)

Best Wishes,

I've never bought a gun that didn't have a purpose.

That being said, I have quite a few guns on the list whose sole purpose will be to fondle.

If a gun is calling to you, buy it. Life is to short to sweat the small things.

Thanks for the welcome Dan. It's good to see you again ole friend.

" ... If a gun is calling to you, buy it ..."

Which one? The .32ACP or the .380ACP? Remember, it's purpose isn't for self-defense (got the MK9, several J-frames, and an NAA Guardian in that size that are better suited for the job) or plicking. As I said, right now it doesn't have a purpose. So, which caliber?

I've had a reason for every gun that I've bought. For many of them, the reason was "cause I want it."

Go for it. I once bought a gun because I got a REALLY good deal on a very slick, well made, pretty holster and belt, but I didn't have a gun that fit it. So I went out and bought one. I still had a lot of fun with it. :p You'll discover that guns purchased under those circumstances are just as much fun to have, hold and shoot, as any gun purchased for more obvious reasons. :D

isnt this like asking "would you go out with a girl you werent interested in dating/marrying/copulating with, but you found the woman somewhat interesting?

the answer obviously is YES, but i wouldnt call it a ''date", its more of a social thing. so yes, go be "social" with the PPK.

I bought my P97DC from a friend just to help him out in his purchase of a Sig Pro. I didn't need it and will always carry my Beretta so it just sits in the gun cabinet waiting on trips to the range. I'm going to buy a Mosin-Nagant at the next gun show just cause they're so cheap.

When did that start? I must have missed the memo on that. I always bought a gun 'cause I just wanted it. Works for me. Good shooting;)

Why do people climb mountains, go skydiving, sleep with uh
anyway you get my point.

I buy guns just to have them. If I get tired of them then maybe
I'll trade for something else that catches my eye.

There aren't too many chances in life to answer whims
Wives/girlfriends/ fast cars /boats and motorcycles are
a little too difficult and or expensive to trade in all the
time.

Guns are the answer to our wanderlust

I can rationalize the purchase of just about anything that goes "bang."

Heck yeah!

Can't hold more than 2 pistols at a time but that doesn't stop me from owning more!

Hi Alan,
When I started buying guns about 20 years ago my rationale was to acquire a fine specimen in every major caliber. After I accomplished that I then "needed" to have something in each of the different action modes; DA/SA, SA and DAO which resulted in having multiple guns in the same caliber. After that I "had" to find the perfect gun for concealed carry, home defense, taking a walk etc. I've gotten to the point where I just say to h*** with it, I think its cool and I want it. Granted, my buying has slowed down tremendously but I've quit trying to find a reason, this is my hobby and by God I'm going to enjoy it. So the answer is yes, I have bought guns without a specific purpose in mind. I bought my Browning BDA .380 and Sig 230 just because.:D I say if its calling you and you can afford it by all means get it and satisfy that craving. Have fun, Mike

I never really bought any of my guns on the basis of practicality or need...

...I just thought they were cool :D

You need a purpose to justify in your mind buying the gun? Well you don't have a gun for self defense work when you want something small, a little different than the others, that holds more rounds than the MK9 and the threat level is low enough that you don't necessarily see 9mm as a necessity. How's that, does that help at all?:D

Seriously, nothing wrong with .380 for defense. Since you have a small 9mm you probably wouldn't use it that much but there is nothing wrong with going with something a little different those times that you won't be very likely to run into trouble. Plus, it sure does have a lot more style and class than that Kahr MK9 (and I do love Kahrs).

You're suppose to have a reason for buying a gun?

Depends if guns are a hobby or a tool for you. I can't ever remember buying a gun because "I needed it".:)

My wife said that she couldn't understand the reasoning for any that I've bought! :)
That aside, I've purchased guns at a good price for the sole purpose of moving them at a higher price, so that I could acquire Smiths for my collection.

I bought all of my guns "because I wanted them". The only reason I would buy for a specific purpose might be for CCW.

Before, no, but I'm going to have to get the Beretta Stampede for the Reehaw factor and if Fortress Skunkabilly gets invaded by Mongols or the Imperialist Japanese army.

In the grand scheme of things; it's not like buying a Harley, a BMW, a Rolex watch, etc. (all of which I consider to be over priced toys - more for show than actual go). If the PPK appeals to you, then get it. What are we talking here - $600 bucks?. Chump change!!

I'll tell you though, I had a 1980's vintage PPK/S years ago and it was complete crap. Also had a 1950's vintage French licenced (they really made all the Wathers between 1945 and about 1980) Wather PP in .32 auto though that was a jewel. I don't know what the current offerings are like, but the PPK/S I had (made under American licence) failed to feed, had a single action trigger pull that took a Gorilla to use, constantly bit the web of my hand, and the magizine would fall out about every 20 rounds or so.

If you want a PPK like pistol (actually more like a Wather PP), the SIG 232 is much superior and about the same price. With that you have a sexy looking pistol that's reliable, useful and actually fun to shoot. Better still the Bersa Thunder is a close South American copy of the Walther - for about $200 bucks and every bit as good.

One reason for purchase that's being overlooked: competition

That's what's fueling my next purchase, but the remainder of my guns I have purchased because I didn't have a gun of that type, and I thought it was neat. So yeah, I have, all of the time!

Yep, CZ-52. Just for fun. On a side note the last new PPK I got to look over was junk, not worth half of the $500+ asking price IMHO. You could see tooling marks easily on the outside of the frame and slide, the DA trigger pull had to be around 25lbs and the SA pull wasn't much better. "They don't make'em like they use to" was very true in this case. Hope if you do give in, yours is an older model or a better example. Good luck.

I'd think most of us with more than a couple of guns would have to honestly admit that we've bought guns simply because it called our name. My handgun supply is somewhat limited but as it stands I have more than I need for any purpose called for. That being said, "if it burns powder and goes bang it can't be all bad." The last gun I bought was certainly an impulse buy and completely without necessity or need, but after reading everything I could find of Skeeter Skelton, the .44 Spcl was singing an irresistible siren song to me. I now own a triple lock and doubt if I'll ever regret having one more "plinker" to play with. Good luck with your Walther, BD

The first rifle I bought, as soon as I turned 18, was a FN FAL. (Dating my self here- this was in ’86, when they were A LOT less expensive then they would be after ’89). And I can honestly tell you why: it wasn’t that it’s an excellent rifle (it is) or that it shoots a whole lot better than me (it does) but for the most ridiculous of reason. Soldier of Fortune magazine. See, my friends and I, after school would poor over SOF, checking out all the cool guns and gear and combat stories (we were just dumb enough at that age to think that war is cool) and I had burned into my brain the image of British troops in Rhodesia, floppy hat, flip flop sandals, short pants… and that FAL.

Well.

I’ve already GOT the hat, the flip flops and the shorts. I’ve got to get that rifle.

Silly I know, but I’m damn glad that I did. Still have it and it still shoots better than I do.

Nope.
