How do you guys feel about the plastic holsters?

Is it "wrong" to use a plastic holster on certain guns such as Sigs, Kimbers, etc...? :D
I've got a Sig coming in next week and I don't think I'm going to use plastic like I have for my Glock. It just doesn't seem right to hold a Sig in plastic.
By plastic, I mean Fobus, Uncle Mike's, Sidearmor, etc...
Your thoughts?

I've tried to warm to the leather holsters, but they just don't jive with me.
Make mine plastic.
The Sigs ride in plastic as do my Glocks.

Sigs are tactical enough to ride in plastic (that's KYDEX btw!). ;)
Revolvers look wrong in Kydex though. But I do have a Blade-Tech for my 625.

A 1911 should be carried in leather. So should most wheelguns.
But a Glock? Kydex all the way, baby.

fobus holsters, as well as the uncle mikes (and the new galco?) are polymer, not kydex...however all kydex holsters are polymer.
i think the sigs, as well as polymer framed walther, glock and hk belong in polymer. they are all part of the high tech/efficiency production revolution. more classic pistols like the 1911, walther pp/ppk and hk p7 deserve leather...as do all wheelguns. the exception is competition...where whatever works is what you use

I recently made my first try at Kydex. I was needing a holster for my BHP and since holsters made specifically for HPs aren't that easy to find I went with a Comp-Tac holster. Let me say that as an ole-timey leather holster kind of guy, I was really impressed. The holster's fit to the pistol is excellent and it somehow managed to have great retention as well as provided for a smooth draw. I am "sold" on kydex - at least from Comp-Tac.

I feel great about my Fobus paddle. Carries my Springfield Ultra Compact very well all day long.
What is a hundred dollar leather holster gonna get you? Is it going to impress the BG when you draw down on him? Maybe the cop will be impressed when he takes your gun as evidence? :D

I'm waiting for my Blade tech holster to arrive to carry my new G36 in.
I curious though....will I have "Burp" it?

What is a hundred dollar leather holster gonna get you? Is it going to impress the BG when you draw down on him? Maybe the cop will be impressed when he takes your gun as evidence? A Blade-Tech isn't much shy of $100, by the way. I paid almost that for my last one, ordered directly from Blade-Tech. (And they've got some speedloader holders for revolvers that will make you gasp, when you see the price tags...) Plastic isn't always cheaper.
A leather holster will, with some guns and some situations, give you a more comfortable carry. I've got an IWB tuckable leather that I use with a Kahr P9 that I can wear all day, traveling, driving, etc., and simply not notice its there. That's harder to do with a kydex or polymer holster.
That said, I've got a Blade-Tech for a SIG GSR and can't imagine a holster that I'd like better for that gun.

All you leather purists are going to hate this but I saw a guy at my range last year with a Ruger single action in a home made kydex tactical thigh holster.
I asked him about it and he said it was for backpacking out west. It provided better access to his gun with all his gear on.
It was a very well made rig with two 1" nylon tiedown straps and a wide piece of kydex that snapped over the hammer and protected the pistol nicely. Only the last inch or so of the grip was exposed. It looked a lot like a black leather calvary holster except for all the nylon attached to the cover and the rivets. I don't know if it was lined.
If I had a camera with me, I'd have taken a picture. It looked like a very functional solution to that guy's problem.

I don't like plastic for IWB. Leather is more comfy & allows me to carry "more" gun.

I am sorry but I think Holsters like forbus should only be used with stainless steel finish guns. Any other finish it will end up scratching it like a catfight.

I like the Kydex models for ease of use but the ones I have also have the paddle. The problem I have is that when the paddle goes on and locks its a take your pants off issue to get the hoster off! I have gone to several leather holsters for use instead because I know they will be more simple to remove when I finish up at the range. The Kydex paddle holsters are a hard to beat combo for such work as a IDPA shoot becasue of the secure fit and not having to worry with a retaining strap. I use both types of holsters depending on the situation in question.

How about kydex with something like a shirt and tie? Or would wearing a shirt/tie and carrying necessitate leather?

Anyone who cherish'es the finish on a new SIG would NEVER put it in a
hard plastic holster, such as those made by Uncle Mikes, Fobus, and
others. If you do, pretty soon your SIG will begin to look like a factory
refurbed gun; with minor wear showing at points of contact with the
holster. Get yourself a quality leather holster from a reputable
manufactuer such as Safariland, Don Hume, or Bianchi Leather. In 10
years, you will be glad you did! :) :D

Wrap your gun in plastic and get the holster wet. Stick your gun in and let the holster dry with the gun in. You may want to put a coat of oil over the entire gun before performing this. Clean and lube as normal afterwards.
My Makarov rides in a Falco leather holster from Makarov.com
My FN Forty-Nine rides in a Fobus. Both work well although I'd like a leather one for the FN. I'll probably buy a nice leather one from Eric when I get my new carry gun (probably a RAMI)

I haven't read the other replies for lack of time. I'll just say this. I have excellent kydex holsters. But, what do I use? Alessi, Tucker, Mernickle...all leather. Dependable, versatile, and I like the way they look, brother...
However...to each their own. I don't know which wears the blue more.

My 226 rides in a Comp-Tac Ghurka. Why? It gets hot here in the summer, and Kydex doesn't soak up and retain water like any non-kydex material (leather) would inevidably do.
Sure, the gun shows MINOR (if you look at it in the right light) marks at the contact points, but I bought the gun because it works, not to look pretty. Besides, I doubt a leather holster would really be that different over time. Like someone else said, holster wear has been around a lot longer than plastic. My grandfather's revolvers are living proof of that.

My P229 goes with me in a Comp-Tac C-TAC. Currently, I have a very nice 12E in brown basketweave from Gun Leather Inc. (http://gunleather.net) in Ft. Worth which holds my P220 most of the time, but I'm strongly considering a C-TAC for it as well.

I favor kydex (as different from cheap plastic as oak is to pine or steel is to iron).
The reason is that it doesn't hold tanning solutions or salty sweat to effect a pistol's finish.
My current favorite is a Comp-tac C-T.A.C.; a quality kydex design that uses leather to good effect as flexible extension tabs for the belt mounts.

Ala Dan,
I respect you as a fellow THR member and Sig shooter, but are you serious?
I have had the EXACT opposite experiences than you.
My P226 continues to look nearly new (after an uncountable amount of draws from a plastic holster) as opposed to a few hundred draws with my P228 & leather Bianchi holster.
Almost every blued Sig that I've seen that has ridden in a plastic/Kydex holster has looked fairly decent whereas all of those that have ridden in leather look like refurbs.
YMMV definately struck a chord on this one! :)

you know, I myself am a pretty large dude, and thus I tend to favor the so-called "mexican carry" (a term I hate to use for its seemingly racist overtones. That said, according to Mas Ayoob, its not a racist term, so I use it) because my gun is simply better concealed on my body that way. For when I carry out in the open (same gun, little Taurus .357), I actually just use a cheapie nylon holster. Washable, easy on the gun, cheap. I actually prefer leather to Kydex, as I think leather is much more attractive, and if you can afford a GOOD leather rig, then I say go that way. If not, Kydex holsters are of uniform quality(depending on your opinion, this may be uniformally bad, but whatever.), functionally the equal of leather, and will not be subject to the same stresses that leather is.
