I'm thinking of getting one, blued, shooter. So far, a S&W 1917 that's been to Brazil and back seems to be the best for the money.
Talk me out of it.

Sorry, but I like em also! I have the newer S&W 625 Mountain Gun in 45 ACP. I have the plastic full moon clips for range work and the steel full moon clips for more serious work. One of my favorite revlovers! Hope you enjoy yours! :)

The Brazil re imports are great guns and good bargains compared to 1917s and 25s/625s. If you can live with the fixed sights they're a good way to get into 45 ACP wheelgunning.

Go for it! It won't be the last .45ACP Revolver you'll get. :)

Is there a specific surplus dealer like SOG or AIM that's got the Brazilian re-imports?

Ah hem... I have nothing against the 1917 (I have a Colt and used to have a Smith) but considering the prices I see on these ($350+ for worn out shooters and $800+ for really nice ones) there is another option to weigh. I bought this 25-2 a few weeks ago for $375. I think it's several times the gun the 1917 is and they are often actually cheaper right now.

Yep - 45ACP in revo is good! I'd like an early M25 but am well happy with my 625-6 - usually only take a finite number of rounds to range - otherwise I keep shooting it till ammo all gone! :p

I used to have a 1917, in .455 actually - lovely gun mechanically but to be honest, for me - not as nice to shoot as a 25.

Or try to find an old ".45 Cal. of 1950." .45 ACP with moon clips works very well.

I bought a 5", new production S&W 625 5" when I was home on vacation in January. The gun shoots and has several nice features.

-Cylinder lockup is excellent.
-The Hogue grips are very comfortable.
-Reloading with moon or half-moon clips is fast and easy.
-Recoil is very mild, as is muzzle blast.
-The gun SHOOTS. It's very accurate.
-The smooth trigger makes extended shooting sessions easy on the digits.

Haven't seen any model 25's around. Might be worth hunting one up. I want to stick with a blued gun.

A non-collectable 1917 can be a fun gun to shoot

But for just a few dollars more, I'd try to find a model 25-2. It's a much better gun and part are easier to come by.

Good Luck...

trick - I have been digging to try and find what I paid for that one. IIRC it was $500 plus region. I got it from Ken (Wild West Guns). Hang on - here is the ad' he placed just over a year ago ....... S&W 625-6 5 inch 45 acp (Model of 1989), like new in box...$559 plus $25. This gun is owned by my sales guys wife and has less than 100 rounds through it..has a real nice trigger... So - that was it. It was in excellent shape and could not have seen too much use.

Opportunistic (impulsive!!) purchase really tho I have had one in mind for some years. Haven't regretted it.

What about the Taurus 455's? I've had an urge for one of those for a while now, just haven't had an opportunity to put money down on one. Yeah, they're 5-shots, but you can buy a heck of a lot of ammo with the price difference between a Taurus and a S&W.

There are deals....

I have two .45 ACP Revolvers. A 1917 S&W model made in 1918 (95% gun family hierloom, not for sale) and a 625 PC with a 4 inch barrell and removeable compentsator. Both are great shooters. The 625 I use in competition, got it from a peace officer who use to carry it but felt it was too heavy for his hip. $500, a great deal at the time...

So keep looking you'll find a deal.... enjoy :)

i have a 25-2 for sale! i posted it sun. ,its 95% or better in a presentation case.6.5 inch bbl its blue. I cant justify keeping it because i dont want to start grindin on it and chopping it up for an open ICORE gun. i would love to sell it or trade it. for something i would use a lot more than a beautiful revolver.Im too poor to own a gun that i only want to shoot a couple of times a year.it is a swweeeeet shooter.ill throw in 20 moon clips too.i have them coming out my ears.

If you think you might get into action shooting (and you should, 45 wheelguns are fun game guns), the new 625 JM comes all set with a nice bead equipped partridge, radically chamfered charge holes and those Miculek grips (if they fit you.)

This one built by Karl Sokol is my favorite.
