I found one used for $380 at a pawn shop, but it only came with one mag. then I saw 'em at Wal-Mart for $418, but they make you wait 3 days cuz they don't keep 'em in stock. So I checked 'em out at Sportsman's Whse, and they had 'em for $429... I've seen 'em at some of the local gun shops but they were all over $450. It came with 2, 12 round mags... They're prices are very good at Sportsman's, and they have a very good selection... Clint

You'll love it. I really like mine. I used to own an XD9. I really liked it and regret selling it, but I like the .40 even better.

I've been considering the XD 9 (maybe the .40) SS Service . (Also considering the CZ 75B, which is quite different, obviously).
My biggest qualm is that I've never really worked with a gun of this type. My regular pistol is the 1911.I might just shoot myself when drawing the XD!!
The trigger feels strange to me, of course, but not bad. I think I could get happy with it. Feels good in the hand. Nice looking. I think the price at the local gun shop was about $489, though, if I remember correctly!?!
Get to the range and try that baby out. Will be waiting for your report!

didn't get to go to the range today, but am going tomorrow... I will let ya'll know how it feels! I kinda like all the safety features this gun has. I've been watching this pistol since it came out, I have to admit that I've never really been a pistol person. This is THE first pistol that I've owned that I actually "wanted" every other one was out of necessity. I really like this one.... Clint

Clint-
You did well on the choice of the XD40. It's a great shooter and comfortable to carry. I bought a Fobus paddle holster for mine and it's a great setup.
I read alot about upgrading to a Don's spring and guide rod kit. I ordered the kit, installed it and shot a box through it. I really didn't care for it and converted back to the Springfield setup. This gun is great as it comes, nothing else needed. Just keep some oil on it, seems to get a bit of surface rust from time to time (no pitting, just surface stuff).
Winchester White Box is runs great through the XD.
If you find yourself back in La. let me know. We'll get together and burn a few rounds.

They still sell handguns at Walmart?
ALASKACAJUN
April 21, 2005, 01:05 PM
Yes Willigee they sell handguns at Wal-Mart in Alaska, but that was the problem that I was referring to. You go in and pay for the gun, then they order it from their distributor and 3 days later you get your gun. For a $10 savings that just ain't gonna cut it for me...
Derryl, I was planning on maybe sneakin' home in October when we get our Permanent Fund Dividend checks from the state. I'll keep you informed on my ETA if I can swing it... Clint

I like the Blazer Brass 165's best as far as range ammo goes.

Congratulations on your purchase, sounds like a pretty good price too. You'll love this pistol.
My only questions is:
Which model are you getting next, the tactical or sub compact? :D

Well ya'll were right, I love this gun... We went to Girdwood last night and shot the XD, a Baby Eagle .45, and a Glock .45... I was able to shoot them all well, but was most proficient with the XD! It was raining when we got there and by the time I got home the rust was already trying to take over... I tried to oil the slide to get the surface rust off but it's being difficult... Clint

Check and make sure the mag feed lips dont touch the ejector, if it does you can break the ejector(not extractor) off....this has been a problem with the XD. I have one in .357sig and I had to lightly file down the lip that goes under the extractor. Take the gun apart and put an empty mag in, push up on the bottom of the mag and see if theres daylight between the feed lip on the mag and the ejector. The reason you push up on the mag is to make sure it clears if you slam a mag home. If it touchs it only takes a small amount of filing to get it down. I had to do 4 mags like that. Springfield was aware of the problem so maybe they have fixed it...just check to save yourself a headache. My XD is my daily carry gun and I love it.

how do ya'll feel about carrying the XD in condition one? I have mixed feeling's and am trying to get someone with first hand knowledge to respond... Nobody that I've asked thusfar has even owned one... Clint

I only have 2 plastic pistols left. One's a G19 the other a Gen 3 HS2000 9mm (identical to XD9). The G19 gets more carry use mainly because the grip is appox. 3/4" shorter than the HS. When I carry either it's with chamber loaded. Holsters made specifically for these guns completely cover the trigger guard, so AD is more or less impossible when the gun is properly holstered. Once the gun is unholstered the safety issue is up to you. Just like any firearm keep your finger off the trigger out of the guard until ready to fire and you'll be safe. Do a little practice drawing the gun (unloaded). I find cross draw holster most comfortable for me.

Clint - I carry mine condition one, but like you I was a little uneasy about it at first. Like popeye said, the trigger guard is covered by the holster. I carried mine around the house with a snap cap, drawing and practicing until I was comfortable with it.
Here is a link from XD Talk Forum that discusses this topic:

Here is a another with a good description of the XD and its safety features:

WOW Eagle45 that XD Talk Forum, just reconfirmed what I already believed to be true. Like you and Popeye suggested I've been handleing the weapon unloaded around the house, trying to get use to the idea that it won't fire inadvertiently... I really like Springfield's two safety approach, it does make me feel a lot safer than a Glock. Thanks for your thought's, Clint

Nevadapistolero, I did as you suggested and checked the clearance of my Mags. If I push up really hard I can get the mag to almost touch the ejector, do you suggest that I alter the mag just to be safe? When I say almost, I mean if it's touching it's barely touching, I can see partial daylight (if that makes since)... Clint

I traded my XD9 towards my HK Tactical 45. There was nothing wrong with it I just didn't shoot well with it. And, I really like guns with external hammers.
The quality of the XD was top notch, comparable to guns costing more. My accuracy with it sucked (but that was certainly me, as others shot it well) and it was totally reliable.

April 24, 2005, 01:23 PM
yeah Mmike87, at first I really didn't want a pistol without an external hammer! but the more I looked at this pistol the more I liked it. Like I posted previously, when my friends and I went shooting, they were much more accurate with the XD than they were with their own weapons...
I was watching one buddy shoot his Glock .45 and he kept pointing the barrel down, compensating for recoil! He does the same thing with my .44, except it's way more noticable. But I guess he feels more confident with the .40 cal, he was hitting his targets, and was not overcompensating for recoil... :D

hey great day loaded up the xd 40 and the 45 off to Ikes
didn't stay long but burnt about 100 .45's and about 100 .40s
I love the XD, it shot great ,I thought it would take some getting use to but I really like the look and feel of that gun.
I'm not sure I'll ever like it as much as my 1911 but then again I'm not still with my first girlfriend either.
the XD-40 is hands down winner in my book!!!!!

Hey Clint-
Glad to hear you and the XD are getting along well.
You may consider sending the XD off for a good coating...Robar, Tripp, etc. Do a search here on coatings if you decide to do it. It may be a good investment considering your shooting climate.
One of them out there even does a camo finish. Looks great on the XD.
As I said before, you've got a good weapon there. You'll be shooting it for years to come. The refinishing may be a good investment.
