dasmi April 20, 2005, 08:15 PM No, you had it right before the apology, Arnold.
Have a look at the poll. Seems the people agree with your first statement.

Well, we know it ain't The Governator.

Third_Rail April 20, 2005, 10:30 PM And we're all so surprised that another politician stabbed us in the back?
(Sorry if I took your line, SW)
Standing Wolf April 20, 2005, 11:16 PM Just another person more worried about re-election than doing what is right.
I doubt McClintock would have sunk to that level.
Joejojoba111 April 20, 2005, 11:29 PM Well, his wife's a Kennedy, and all her rich friends probably said "*** did your husband say? I'm not going to start paying minimum wage for someone to take care of my children!"
And then Arnold got an earful from the board of directors of Walmart, "*** did you say? We're not going to start paying minimum wage to legal immigrants to put boxes on shelves!"
Election schmelektion, he has to have lunch with all these rich people tomorrow and the day after that, and the day after that. It doesn't matter that they could solve the problem by increasing security, and increasing quotas, thus regulating the immigrants and increasing the quality of labour influx, and they would all be documented - increasing documented economic performance, and they'd be happier living as equals - reducing crime rates, etc etc.
Open border = cheap labour, bad for everyone (US citizens, Mexican workers) except rich people. They don't care about crime - they have fortified mansions with safe-rooms, high walls and security patrols of hired police officers. Let the peasants deal with all the problems of millions of illegal immigrants.

Careful with the generalizations. I know a handful of "rich people" (anual income of $500k to $1 mil) who couldn't afford all that. The people who directly benefit from illegal immigration are a very small (but powerful) minority.

Cosmoline April 20, 2005, 11:45 PM When Oregon's great Gov. Tom McCall said the same thing back in the 1970's, he didn't take it back. And in hindsight Oregon would have been much better off it had been able to close the border. Those people from the south ruined my home state. The fact that the heart of evil is getting overrun now is just poetic justice.
El Rojo April 21, 2005, 12:37 AM You guys crack me up. Instead of him honestly saying he misspoke, you assume he meant it that way the first time. Now you judge his character because he had the common decency to clarify himself. Again, you crack me up.
I know he meant to tighten up the borders and not "close them completely". Anyone with half a brain knew what he was saying. Only people on the left who want to paint him as extremist would think he really mean closed. Oh and xenophobes that can't see the forest for the trees. But hey, whatever.
dasmi April 21, 2005, 12:38 AM I heard the actual audio. It was clear he meant it when he said close them. I'll try and find a transcript to post.
Jim Diver April 21, 2005, 01:43 AM For a while I actualy thought he grew a pair and was wanting to do the right thing....
Then he showed his true colors... a nice yellow stripe down his back.

El Rojo April 21, 2005, 01:56 AM Ok, other than calling the guy a coward, does anyone have any logical reason why we should "close" the borders? I assume close means cut off all immigration period. Am I the only one here who sees a legitimate purpose for legal aliens?
coltrane679 April 21, 2005, 02:00 AM Why doesn't apologize for outlawing .50BMG?
Screw Arnold--he deserves his fate.
RealGun April 21, 2005, 05:41 AM It was perfect, because it focuses attention on the issue. It was also a no nonsense, straightforward answer to a question. Kudos to the person who asked the question.

see the problem was, as some people are saying- and for once i agree (or thought i did) with arny.
he said "close the borders" , but continueded, clarifying something to the effect we need security t ostop the flow of illegals, and the illegals were a huge problem.
of course the media focused on "close the borders" , which yes, if you didnt listen to everything he said, it sounded like dont let in immigrants period, he should have worded it better,
but what he meant was stop the flow of illegals.
ps- had the option of picking up an illegal to work for me today(yesterday), and it would have saved me some time. proably cost an extra $1 diesel, 20 min, and i could easily give the illegal $5 less wages for the work.
i kept driving past the day laborers, went to the park and found a homeless person (actually car-house person)
Smoke April 21, 2005, 08:41 AM Am I the only one here who sees a legitimate purpose for legal aliens?
I have no problem with legal aliens, it's the illegal one that bug me.
If we could close the borders for a period to stop the flow of illegal ones, we might actually get a handle on it. Then we can open back up and only let the legal ones through.
Smoke
RealGun April 21, 2005, 09:58 AM Note that "close the borders" literally means you can't go in or out. Reasonable to assume then that it is not what he really meant. I DO think he meant not to pussyfoot around about illegal immigration, smuggling, etc.
lostone1413 April 21, 2005, 10:50 AM Trouble with the legal Mexicans they our the ones making the most noise about us wanting to stop the illegals from coming over. That show you when push comes to shove what country they even being legal are loyal to? It darn well shows me!
Lennyjoe April 21, 2005, 10:55 AM Sounds like Arnie is turning into a "Girly Man".
longeyes April 21, 2005, 11:48 AM Yes, there's a purpose for legal aliens. A substantial percentage of the high-tech businesses in Silicon Valley, for example, have been created by legal aliens. But for some reason we fail to grasp the obvious: we need people with advanced skills who can help this nation stay competitive in the 21st century against the very serious challenges it is going to face. How many more unskilled, uneducated blue collar workers do we need to import? Don't we have enough of our own in that class now and don't we already have millions enough of illegal migrants from Mexico already? Immigration is not supposed to be a welfare program for Mexico, it is supposed to be about strengthening America. Closing the borders does not have to mean stopping trade, but it doesn't have to mean the unfettered transfer of labor. Schwarzenegger was merely voicing what a majority of Californians--and American citizens in general--really think: We need a moratorium to get a handle on this problem and the time to discuss all aspects of it openly. We can't do that while a shadow invasion is going on and all mention of the problem is barred by the PC mania. From here it looks as if the mentality of la mordida has already deeply infected our own culture.

Correct.
gunsmith April 21, 2005, 04:43 PM my girlfriend is mexican/american from arizona (she cooks a great javalina)
her grandparents came here legaly and learned english and taught her to shoot, fine people in my book.
bush has got to realize that he represents America,he sometimes acts like he represents mexico. there was n illegal who recently got a lenghty jail sentence in SJ CA he kidnapped and raped a 9yr old girl (a legal mexican immigrant) if he had made it back over the border he would have been scott free.
try sneaking into mexico sometime, see how well they treat you.
they treat their fellow latin americans like dirt when they catch them sneaking in from central america.
we need to end immigration for awhile to get it back in order. no other country allows the assault on it's borders and culture that we do.
their was a judge from china who recently retired here in CA,totally views gun ownership as privledge granted by the state,a women I work with is vietnamese, she got her mother on social security and her mom never worked a day here in her life. a guy from egypt recently told me that "the Jews are lying about the holocaust" he's here legally, belives in gun control and communism and votes! another guy from work is from nigeria and he allways refers to GW as "the pig" I call city hall and can't get anyone who speaks english!
when I visit other countries I am far more respectful of their customs.
Immigration has been great for this country but recently it has been terrible, especialy illegal immigration.
My opinion is we need to stop for awhile and make sure we get people who want to be Americans not destroy the American way of Life,Liberty & Pursuit of happiness
Jim Diver April 21, 2005, 05:50 PM does anyone have any logical reason why we should "close" the borders?
1) Till we can get a handle on who is entering, there is no reason to keep our front and back doors open. Wether they entered though legal means or not, we must know who these people are and what they want.
2) Till every citizen who wants a job has a job, we should not allow outsiders to take jobs that americans are willing to do. Take care of our own first.
3) Illegals send over 17 BILLION dollars a year to mexico for work they do here. Most of this is untaxed. The state should get a cut of this. Till we know who is working here, there is no way to monitor it.
El Rojo April 21, 2005, 08:01 PM So with gun crime being where it is, should we outlaw guns until we can get a good grasp on the situation? I mean afterall, we don't really care that illegal aliens by law don't care about breaking the law to sneak across the border, so why don't we start to cut down on this by keeping the legal aliens out right? It guess you guys are right, that makes sense. Ban guns for a while and we will be able to get a hold of this violence problem in America and then we can start again after it is in check. :scrutiny:
lostone1413 April 21, 2005, 08:52 PM Kind of a smart remark about the guns. But if you want to bring it up close to 90% of the violent crime committed in this country Is committed by Non White. Not racist but facts
QuickDraw April 21, 2005, 09:21 PM does anyone have any logical reason why we should "close" the borders?
Yes,at least temporarily until we can get a handle on it.
The labor market is FLOODED with cheap labor.Thats not good for any blue collar type, this includes me.
When the labor market gets flooded with cheap labor,I can't compete. When you add in "fees" that I have to pay:
TAXES
Drivers license
Registration on my truck
Insurance on my truck(un-insured,mainly because of illegals)
Contractor license
Contractor bond
General liability
My health ins.
etc,etc,etc.
I don't think the guys standing on the street or mowing lawns are burdened with these "fees".
I'm trying to play by the rules and do it right,
why should I and anyone else be penalized for
playing by the rules?
This is one of those situations where it all depends on whose ox is being gored.
El Rojo: This isn't directed at you,I just thought it was good question.

The Austrian-born film-star-turned-politician backtracked hastily after his proposal provoked nationwide outrage. He said the United States should "close the borders in California and all across - within Mexico and the United States.
"I think it is just unfair to have all those people coming across, have the borders open the way it is, and have this kind of lax situation."
The Republican governor later corrected himself, claiming that he intended to say that the border should be secured. "Yesterday was a total screw-up in the words I used," he said. "Because instead of closing, I meant securing. I think maybe my English, I need to go back to school and study a little bit."
