Hi, I do not have a 45/70 yet, but I am thinking about getting one. I have to reload, and I found these bullets. Would these make a good load? Are they accurate? The gun woule be a Marlin Guide gun.

Personaly I dont think you can't go past a good 405gn slug out of the 45gov though I've had fantastic results on camels & donkies with 300 gn jhp .I dont know that Id be using any thing but Jacketed projs out of a rifle that has a Magna-port system at the muzzel I could have been mislead but i have heard that cast or plain lead (Moly coated ) tend to lead up the ports .I prefer to cast my own & have a fantastic 405 gn flat nose mould from CBE that really does the job.

Sounds like they'd be nice bullets but you're paying a premium for what may be a non-existent problem with your rifle. I've had two ported Guide Guns and haven't had leading problems on either except for a small amount that got deposited on the front sight hood because of its proximity to the ports. Different bullet alloys at different speeds might, however, cause leading in the guns/ports. My current GG (stainless) likes 300 grain JHP much better than lead so I quit loading the 405 grain lead. They no longer make Guide Guns with ports so that may not be a concern. If you find a ported version, when cleaning, you can run a pipe cleaner with solvent through the ports to de-grunge them.

The gun I am getting has the ports. How hard is it to clean out the ports? What other bullets would you reccmend for reloading the 45/70?
Thanks for the help, keep it coming, Ryan

You'll enjoy the ports. Somebody else might have had problems but to me they're just no problem to clean. I have the pipe cleaners from Brownells. These are the kind with nylon scrubbing bristles mixed in with the regular pipe cleaner bristles. I dip it in Hoppes and ream it back and forth in the ports a few times. Follow up with a clean pipe cleaner.

I think you should buy mine instead. I cast for .45-70 in 300, 405 and 500 grain gas checked, and I'll do them either lubed and sized or moly-coated.
