I have an opportunity to buy a Remington 870 Wingmaster. It is an older model with 28" Vent Rib and Polychoke (the short kind without the muzzle brake). Wood furniture is excellent. It is 2 3/4"

Cost is $200 out the door. Would it be worth it?

Yeah, I would buy it if it were in 90% or better shape on the wood, blueing I could care less about so long as there is no pitting in the metal.

The Poly choke is a hap-hazard affair. The ONLY way to have a clue as to what pattern it will throw is to pattern it with the load you plan on shooting. I would chop that barrel off at 21", make that my slug and home defense barrel and buy a 30" full for all my hunting needs for the princely sum of 75 bucks or so. Between a 30" full and a 21" cylinder I can cover all that a shotgun can do really, if I was in a spending mood a Modified barrel for $60 or so would be OK too.

Sounds pretty good, except for the polychoke. I'd probably have that barrel cut down and get another long barrel.

I'd buy it. I had the opportunity to buy a really nice Wingmaster for $200 and am kicking myself because I didn't do it.

As for the Polychoke, lots of folks liked them, which is why there's so many around. I suggest patterning for POA, sometimes there's alignment problems.

Try a few rounds of your clay game of choice. If you can't hit up to your standard, lop the Poly off and get a newer barrel.

This is like would you rather: (1) win the lottery, or (2) have everyone in your family die a horrible death... Buy it! The Wingmasters are great, and in my limited experience, the PolyChokes actually work, at least reasonably well. If you don't want it, please point the guy in my direction.

The poly choke would turn me off. Personally I'd rather put $200 towards a new 870 express with screw in chokes. But that's just my opinion.

I faced a similar decision 8 years ago with an 870 Wingmaster with a 28" Modified barrel, I bought the gun for $175 and have never regretted it. I now call it "Old One Eye". We have become a good team on the Texas dove. Wingmasters have "IT". Two bills well spent. Good luck.
