These are two I built on my own. One is .45 and the other is 50 cal. Just felt like posting this. I'm working on a .40.

That's a nice pair of smokepoles!

What kind of locks and barrels? Did you make the stocks from blanks or were the precarved? Details man! :)

The barrels are Green Mountain on the 45 and a Rawls on the 50. The locks are Siler. The wood on the both were inlet for barrel I did the lock, trigger and butplate. They were also drilled for the ramrod. The 45 was my first and I learned a lot from it. Like how I drilled the holes in the lock in the wrong place. Most things were fixed on the 50. I tried my hand at raised carving on the 50 and was pretty happy. The 40 I'm working on now will be pretty plain. Basicly a southern mountain/Tennesee rifle. No patchbox and all iron hardware. I got all the parts from Muzzleloader builders supply in Ozark AR. I figure I have about 50-60 hours in each one. So far I probably have that much in my current one and I'm not done. I didn't have a model to go off of so I was looking at lots of books. Learned how to brown parts, scrape wood and other things. It was really a fun experience. The only power tool I used was a drill for the holes in the lock, tang and trigger.

I have an older man(80) who lives near my parrents. I would go visit him every 4 or 5 months and look at his rifles. He has built 83. He was a wealth of info. He leant me 2 books. One was a paperback and the other was hardback and both were old. I also went to the public library and checked out books on flintlocks. Most just had pictures but I would use those for help. www.trackofthewolf.com also has pics online. I did a lot of looking. muzzleloader builders supply is about 2 hours from me and they quickly became my friend. They don't have a walk in store but were more than willing for me to stop by and watch and learn. After I built the first one I was so happy and proud of it. I then looked at some that others had built and realized I have a long way to go. But you know what, it shoots straight and my second was built better. You can start with a kit or buy the pieces and build it from scratch. I went with the pieces. Some of it is scarry the first time like drilling the flash hole, because I kept thinking if I screw this up there goes the barrel, but its really not hard. I recomend anyone to try. They like lots of other things however are addictive. I now really want to take a deer with a flintlock rifle I built myself. :)
