Thanks for the kind words, yup, its painted. Its my kayak/canoe gun, stays in the bottom of the boat, gets stepped on, wet, muddy, but is a real good shooter. I won't take my AR or FAL in a small boat that has put my old butt in the water more times than I care to remember. I tie a 6' parachute cord to it and fasten the other end to a seat cushion.

Here are a close up of the US WWII, the FAL, and the AR15

Thanks again, I'll rotate the flag, my mistake. Ed, I got the 03A3 at local gunshow for $225, the stock had been shortened and the front parts missing. A good friend is a ROTC instructor at a local college, he sort of owed me a couple of favors, I hinted I needed a stock, front barrel band, ect, a week or so later he brought that stock in unissued condition with all "R" marked new hardware for the entire gun. The rest of the stuff I just slowly accumulated over ther years, combination of friends, good pawnshop connections, flea markets, ebay, local gunshows, its just a matter of looking. I'm really about done. I reload and shoot almost all of these. Sunday I took out the P17, 03,03A3, and Garand and fired about 150 rounds. Sometimes I'll just bring the DSA FAL, AR15, and AK for an afternoon. Next week is German pistols, or sometimes the WWII main battle rifles. Except for the French and Italian guns I shoot them all regularly..again, except for the French & Italian rifles I could pull any of them off the wall, load them up and walk out the door shooting it. I've embarassed myself with friends when its cleaning time. I think nothing of tearing down a Luger, P38, Tokarev, Browing HP, 1911A1 and a Beretta all at once, throwing all the parts in one pile and cleaning them. I just shoot and clean them a lot. To me that's what they are for. I'm glad I can now post photos, very very few people have seen these, my rule is if you are under forty five and I have known you for less than ten years they dont exist. But the friends who do are welcome anytime and we stack them in the back of a pickup truck, open up boxes of ammo, and you load and shootwhatever you want. I'll take some range photos the next time I'm out.

Thanks again, yes, I am married, just had my thirtieth anniversary last week. The cot is there for whenever I want to take a nap. I have three grown kids, retired SFC and am a high school JROTC instructor. Exceppt for the FAL I've never gone in debt for one (paid it off in two months) and my wife knows all about it. She is NOT a gun person at all. Again, its been a steady slow accumlation over a long time. I'm 53. Once I got out of the survival stage of life and into the accumulation I made this my single hobby instead of golf, motorcycles, new cars/trucks, ect. for nonessential income. Women must have security first, make sure they know that is the first priority and give it to them then there are play options.

Concerning the WWII Japanese army rifle. I’ve heard the Japanese increased the caliber of their main issued rifles just before the war, to something slightly larger then the U.S. M1 Garand and British Enfield rifle caliber. Possibly also modified the chambers so both rounds would fit. Supposedly this made it possible for Japanese soldiers to fire captured ammo, but their enemies could not fire captured Japanese ammo. Does anyone know if this is true?

Roadkill, have you ever tried other rounds in your Type 99? Not that I’m suggesting you should try; it would be a sin to damage an historical weapon just to test what may be an urban legend.

Roadkill
April 23, 2005, 12:08 PM
Most WWII rifles are about .30 caliber. The Japanese first used a 6.5mm but due to experience in China increased it up to a 7.7mm. The US used a 30-06 which is a 7.62mm. The Germans used 7.92, the French a 7.5mm, the Brits a .303 which is very close to the Japanese 7.7mm. You can resize and neck down 30.06 brass to use in the Japanese 7.7, you can also use .303 for bullets in the 7.7. I use the same bullets for 30.06 and .308, but I always down load for consideration of the age of the guns. The caliber means diameter of the projectile/bore of the gun, the huge difference is in chamber sizes and case lenghts and rimed/unrimmed cases. I am very careful not to get ammo switched around but the differencs in most are easy to spot. Just because you can get a round in the chamber and close the bolt does not mean it was meant to fire it. To answer your question, I never use a round in a gun that was not designed specifically for it. When reloading for these antiques I have the Speer handloading guide in my lap checking OAL, dimensions, amount of charge, and case length. No mistakes allowed. Screw the urban legend, I don't want to blow my head off.

Roadkill

Per your request, the question of the AK being legal in that configuration was discussed earlier, my opinion was that since it was still a one piece stock with a little "alteration" it would be ok, those who know better suggested it was not, I have respectfully agreed with them and since removed the one pictured and aquired another MAK 90 stock and painted it. Its a MAK 90, great shooter, excellent trigger, really a good bang around gun.

. . . who is Burt Gummer. . . I don't get out a whole lot . . . Roadkill, no disrespect meant, I like your collection.

Burt Gummer was a survivalist-type character played by Michael Gross in the movie Tremors and its three sequels - the kind of guy who had a license plate reading UZI 4 U.

If you haven't seen the movie, I recommend you rent it. (In the original movie, Burt's wife was played by Reba McIntyre.)

(Tremors movie spoiler follows)

When the graboid broke into Burt's basement - attracted by the vibrations of the Dillon case cleaner - Burt and Reba backed off to the far wall, which was COVERED with guns. (Sound familiar?)

They just kept taking one gun down after another and emptying it into the graboid until Burt took a .600 NE double and finished the job. He then commented about the graboid breaking into the wrong rec room, using some language Art's grammaw wouldn't approve of.

Roadkill....heck of a nice collection...I say make it into a mini museum and charge admission!!!!

Tyril, the smaller one is .38sw, the other has been modified to shoot .45 acp by using moon clips. The .38sw ammo as purchased today is anemic, way underpowered. I use 124g cast bullets with a full load of Unique, take .38 special rounds and cut them off to length. The .45 has to be downloaded from modern cartridge power. I can get about 5g Unique in the .38SW because of the case length and use the same load for the .45 using 230g lrn.
These guns to me are not easy to shoot well. I can do pretty well with the .45 but don't really spend enough range time with either to get proficient. The .38sw was made in 1944, the other 1917.

Your collection is excellent thank you for sharing.

Thanks again, but there can't be a house fire cause there isn't a house. Here's the whole story. In 1935ish a series of tornadoes came thru Alabama, bunch of folks got killed. In 1980 I bought 6.5 acres and an old house that was built in the late 30's. The house was built with a full storm shelter under it. When I retired and was ready to settle on the property the house was too close to the road for my liking and wasn't really feasible to rebuild. I sold it to be moved, it was. There was a 14'x20' open topped two room storm shelter. Instead of filling it in I fenced it off, waited a few years, built my house back in the woods, then made it my project to dig out and seal the walls, water proof it, and since I'm retired Army 12B40 (Combat Engineer) with a good bit of building and concrete experience, I put a concrete roof on it and covered it up. I also moved the entrance to the back side and landscaped the whole thing. It has a steel door. Better yet, I made the acquaintance of a retired CSM Korean & Vietnam War vet at a VFW meeting. He was looking for a place in the country to locate his doublewide. It now sits about 50' to the front of my toy room, he sits in a swing with a M1 carbine in a blanket with him all the time. Nice guy, five purple hearts, several Bronze Stars w/V, two star CIB. But he's old and not in the best of health, he and his wife rarerly leave the premises.
Believe me, its safe.
