In a Marlin 39 ? Or say a Winchester pump ? Trying to decide if I "need" a Marlin . ( must be without the crossbolt safety)
The last Winchester I saw was $850 . wow :uhoh:
Thanks , Jack

.22 mag is just about my favorite bullet.
You definetly don't see them around as much as I would like.
$850 for a Win is way to high for any around here.
Do you have anything against bolt-action or even auto-loaders?

I just 'saw' (and held) a Henry lever action .22mag that I will be buying next week for around $270. I was so pleasantly suprised by the smooth action of the .22 version that I picked up last year that a mag version was bound to happen sooner or later.
FWIW- there is no crossbolt saftey on these Henry lever rifles. They are not show-pieces by any means with their painted recievers and plastic front sight/barrel bands...........but that smooth action!!! It will be a great plinker.
I have read lots of bad reports on the internet about the quality & poor function of these rifles but mine works just great so I will gamble on the .22mag being just as good.

The 22 Mag concept is superb. The only thing that holds me back (probably forever) from getting one for myself is the ammo price. Just seems unproportionaly expensive.

I've done quite a bit of hunting with the 22 Magnum. Coon and crow to 100 yards, maybe a bit further and coyote out to about 75 yards. I'm patient and will not take a shot I'm not comfortable with. I wouldn't consider taking any of these with a 22lr.
My buddy just traded a 9422 (I think that's what it's called) in 22 Magnum for an older Colt revolver worth $400 and last one in my local shop I saw was priced at $400.
Personally, I like the 22 Magnum just fine. I don't compare ammo costs with the 22LR, more towards a 22 Hornet.

The first pistol I ever fired was a single action 22 mag revolver with a 9" barrel. It belonged to my uncle, and we would engage in tactical racoon home defences with it. I stayed with him a few times, and he lives out in the boonies without running water or electricity. At night the racoons would start getting into stuff, so i would position myself 5' from the front door, and he would swing it open fast, whence i would blast the racoon sitting on the porch. Good times.
The first scoped rifle i ever fired was also a 22 mag. I could shoot the rivets out of old tea kettles with it.

Coon and crow at 100 yards? I hunt bees at 100 yards with mine. I set up a pop can on a stump, crank the scope up to 9X, and start piling up the body parts. :D

I have never been a big fan of the 22mag, but for some unknown reason I been thinking about getting one recently. Now to decide which one to buy. I've narowed it down to a Win 9422 (to match my 22lr), a Henry, and the Rossi 62? pump.
Right now I'm leaning toward the Rossi short barrel in stainless with the new tang sight. Just looks like a cool gun.
Of course I have no idea what I'm going to do with it, but that's never stopped me before.

I haven't owned a .22 Mag. since the mid-60s, but the gun shops here are full of them. Well, I do have a Single-Six Convertible, but this is the Rifle forum.
I've never seen a Marlin 39A in .22 Magnum ;) I don't think anyone has, unless it was in the Marlin prototype shop.
Maybe it's because the family business for so many years was an apple orchard, but why would anybody shoot a useful little critter like a bee? Useful is too mild a word - we all depend on them.

I don't have a thing against bolts or auto loaders , Just being left handed I'm more comfortable than shooting it right handed . I have a 597 in 22mag and while it shoots real well , it doesn't carry as well as , let's say my 39 . The Leupold rimfire scope let's me take advantage of the range of the round and all . Maybe the problem here is that the rifle is to fat where I hang on to it at .
Shoulda bought the Kimber left-hand bolt I saw a couple years ago when I didn't "need" a 22 magnum huh? :(
Or teach my right eye to focus better ! :banghead:
