I am looking to scope a nice little Ruger OM M77RL .30-06. This rifle is nice and light and I want a rugged scope that compliments the size of the Ruger. I also want it to be kind of a classic set up: walnut, blued steel, and a nice trim scope (does it get any better?).

I am looking at the Weaver K4. I know that back in the day they were nice scopes. Witness the number of K4s still in service (still being used in gunrags, if you put stock in gunrags). But, does anyone have any experience with the new ones? I like that they are made in the US and they seem pretty reasonably priced if the quality approaches that of the vintage K4s.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks,
Matt

I believe the new K4s are made in Japan.

If you want USA made, you may have to get a Leupold- some of their models are still made here. I don't know of any other brand still making riflescopes in the USA. The modern Weavers are made overseas(Japan?), & are great scopes for the $$. I have a "post El Paso" Japanese-made Weaver V-10 from about 10-12 yrs ago, & think it's a dandy scope. But if I was to do it over, I'd probably get a K-4. BTW, the newer ones are optically superior to the old ones, primarily because of better lens coatings & a slightly larger objective lens. I suspect they're just as rugged & long-lasting too, but only time will tell for sure.

BTW: So you want blue steel, walnut, & a trim scope- you have good taste, Matt! It's a curse you'll just have to live with. :D

In addition to Leoupold, Burris out of Greeley Colorado is a U.S. product and I think the Leatherwood scopes are too.

We put a Weaver K4 on the FN Mauser 30-06 Curly Francis built for us in 1950. It is still on the rifle. :D

Thanks guys,

It stinks that I'll never be able to hunt with this rifle in the state I live in. :banghead:

Anyone know anything about Hunter Wicked Optics?
