Assume I've already heard all the bad things about the Mini.

http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/amegaranges.htm

http://www.ultimak.com/M4.htm

Anybody with any direct experience with these care to comment, specifically as to how well they work, how hard they are to install, how secure the mount is, how sturdy or fragile they are, and if either interferes with any normal operation or disassembly of the gun.

Any alternatives?

Hi Lee,

I know nothing about them personally, but I do know I read a lot of info over at Perfect Union. You might search through their forums. That there is Ruger Mini country...

I bought the ultimak for my Mini-14. It is very to install. If you know how to operate a screwdriver (righty tighty, lefty loosy), then you're qualified. I think the ultimak might actually add to the accuracy of the mini. The rail clamps on the barrel and might reduce the barrel whip associated with the flimsy factory barrel. I used some loctite on the screws and they haven't worked loose through about 1000 rnds so far. I had the choice between the Amega and the Ultimak...I don't remember why, but I chose the Ultimak.

I like the lines of the Amega a little better myself.

With the ultimak rail on the mini-14, can you leave room for expansion? I have one on my M1 carbine and it's great, but you are explicitly told to leave room between the mount and both the receiver and barrel band. If you don't the thermal expansion of the mount will cause stringing just as bad as a cheap barrel will.

Ultimak for my AK.
It's swell.
Pricey, but swell.
