An unknown firebomber hurled Molotov cocktails at three Albuquerque
fast-food restaurants and at a parked police car early Tuesday, firefighters
say.
One of the Central Avenue fast-food businesses — the Arby's at Central
and Truman — sustained an estimated $80,000 in damage. And workers at one
McDonald's were getting ready to open for the morning when a fiery cocktail
was tossed in.
Although no injuries were reported, "they were scared to death," fire
Lt.
Lynn Reule said of those workers later in the day. "Property damage is one
thing. But people getting injured or killed is another."
The first arson of the morning was reported just after 3:30, Reule said.
The crook or crooks tossed a Molotov cocktail — a homemade device consisting
of fuel, a bottle and wick — at the drive-up window of the McDonald's at
Central and Yale. That firebomb caused only minor damage, and the business
was later able to open.
The second firebombing, this one at the Arby's, was reported at 4 a.m.
In
that arson, someone broke a door and tossed the cocktail inside. Reule said
it will likely take several days to fix the damage.
The last business, the McDonald's at Central and Tramway, was targeted
about 5 a.m. A rock was hurled through the drive-up window, and a cocktail
was thrown in behind it.
A small fire flashed up but extinguished itself, Reule said. She said
that business was "up and running" by 8 a.m.
A parked squad car on Roma NE, near the last McDonald's, also had its
windows smashed, and another firebomb was tossed at it. It did not erupt
inside the car, which Reule said sustained only minor damage.
Reule said people with information on the fires are urged to call Crime
Stoppers at 843-STOP.
