Got Caught & A Little About 5.11 Pants...

Well, I was able to leave work early and decided to sneak off to the local CTD store. I usually go there every pay day for a little ammo but missed last Friday due to a work function  .

I was on a tight time schedule. I had to be in order to get home and stash the ammo away and look innocent :) . It was raining/hailing at times, tornado warning sirens were sounding (no joke), close to 1600 hours, and traffic was getting more backed up by the minute. But undeterred I drove on...

So I quickly picked some Gold Dots and Golden Sabers, conversed with a clerk regarding the likely availability of S&B in .45 ACP (they were out), handled a HK .45, marveled at the 12 round capacity of its mags :what: , looked at .357's in Ruger and S&W, had a brief discussion about those S&W locks, got a Hougue grip, had another brief discussion about what was the most common grip screw thread size and whether I should rethread/retap the grip screw holes on my CZ's so I could get cooler looking grip screws, had yet another brief discussion about what was the best and closest rifle range in the area, and finally hurried off to the register. But then I remembered "5.11 pants! Yes they have 5.11 pants!", that was supposed to be the main purpose of this trip :banghead: My ADD got the best of me.

"Well...", I said to myself "I can still make it". I was going through the stacks of pants as fast as I could at the risk of making a mess and pissing off the clerks. I even broke a little sweat. And then I got paged! It was my wife...more than a little sweat. She almost never pages me. In fact, I complain how I'm always the one to call. So, I had to call back. Well, to make the long story less long...Caller ID is not always a good friend but I calmly explained how I was able to leave work early and that I was just catching up on what I was supposed to do last Friday. I was surprised at her calm and accomodating reaction, especially considering our recent discussions of our financial matters. I think she figured "Well, he is buying pants. He never buys clothing..."

I still made it home in time to stash the ammo and she liked those 5.11 pants!
She looked at the big back pockets, said "What are these?", stuck her hands down in them pockets and  :D It all went much better than it could have!!! :)

Now about those 5.11 pants... Most were made in Combodia, some in Hong Kong. Slight variations in color were noticable especially in the Olive green. Some pairs' fabric also felt thicker than others regardless of place of manufacture. Some had the flash light pocket on the right side some on the left. I plan to use that pocket for an extra mag so I chose the ones with it on the left for 'tactical' reasons ;) For some strange reason, all of the pants that had the flash light pocket on the left side had some extra fabric reenforcement on the corners of the front main pockets. I chose Khaki.

Funny, my gal stopped by CTD for me earlier tonight. She said she must love me if she goes Wilson mag shopping for me during a tornado watch.

It's the Cheaper Than Dirt store.

There can be only one, and we have it.

The catalogue pales in mere comparison to it. Only a few have seen through the swinging door to the warehouse. Fewer still have been into the Inner Sanctum itself.

Dang, you must have been desperate to get out Don. I stay away from 820 any time near that time of day. The tornadoes don't bother me so much. Traffic is the real hassle. Of course, it was a CTD run. I do need to make one myself before too long.

The best thing about the CTD store for me? It's down the street from Winchesters :D

I know all about the horrors of 820, but what is the best way to CTD once you're on 183 heading west and you hit the 820 junction, or is there a better approach than 183 (starting a bit south of 635 east of the tollway)? I even stopped and asked at the N. Richland Hills police station yesterday (there must have been something in the water, because it looks like half of THR went there yesterday), and they had no good alternate route suggestions for taking 820 to the 820/35 junction.

It's to the point where I'd almost stay on 121 and then head north on 35, even though that's twice the distance.

the 5.11 pants are nice, but i think they need some thicker fabric in the pockets. carrying spare mags and a flashlight has worn through the bottom edges of the pockets, so now i use the cargo pockets instead of the 'easy access' ones.

Check out Military Gun Supply if you like CTD and are in the area. Not the same kind of selection, but worth the trip. www.militarygunsupply.com

I stopped by the CTD store during a road trip with Art last spring. I still have dreams.

Ah, but if you are a CTD buyers club member it ONLY works online. You get squat in the store. I asked the clerk once why I wasn't getting a 10% discount on ammo and she told me that the CTD online and the CTD brick and mortar store were not owned by the same parent company. :scrutiny:

You guys got CTD stores?

Just one as far as I know. I wish there was one in south Fort Worth closer to where I live. They have the cheapest quality .45 ammo I have been able to find S&B for $8.90 something (with the in store membership).

They do have an in store membership that gives you discounts on selected items such as the S&B .45 ACP. I'm not sure if they still offer it to new people but they still honor mine. Nothing like 10% though - a few cents here and there.

Military Gun Supply is a great place. The only store I have found Bulgarian AK's in. They probably have the best selection/availability of surplus ammo anywhere locally as far as I know.

I usually get there coming from the south on I-35 which is often stopped up from I-30 on. I'm not sure the best way is to get there coming from the east. If I-35 is jammed I go all the way round 820 west then south onto 20 east.

My 5.11 have the slightly thinner fabric but I'm in TX so I prefer it. I may come up with a simple pocket insert to help decrease the wear.

I'm not bothered by tornados much either but I pay a little more head to the warnings since the last big one in '99 missed me by a few minutes. I was going South on I-35 east of downtown FW and later found out I had passed through its path about 5-10 min before it went over I-35 on its way out of FW and toward Arlington.

Dang! I was just down there a month ago. Oh, well, I go to the Sportsman's Guide Liquidation Store .(it's in the warehouse, and you can order anything from the catalog right there and have it in ten minutes.) It's about 20 minutes from my house. :)

"'5.11 pants are made in Cambodia and Hong Kong? Aw, man..." and someone on another thread said a pair of his was made in Vietnam.

Sportsman's Guide is pretty neat too. I got a nice pair of dress shoes for $24 - wow.

Jeez, I bet you could stand those up in a corner.

Sylvilagus Aquaticus: What, pray-tell, is Winchesters? I'm planning a CTD/MGS run soon, and your statement intrigues me... :scrutiny:

BTW, any ranges in Ft. Worth that rents guns to shoot? I know about DFW guns, but I'm looking for something specific in the FW area while I'm on my next CTD/MGS run....

I get out there every couple of months. It is a blessing.

Last time I was there I broke down & bought a 5.11 "Tactical" vest. Hey, they actually carried XXL & the price was 2/3 of any other retailer.

So far, I have only worn the vest when me & my boy (6 months old) are "stagging" it out on the town while my wife is out doing her own thing with her girlfriends.

I can stuff all the diapers, wet wipes, bottles w/ nourishment, changes of clothes, changing pads, chew toys, etc. in all the pockets. It is more convenient than a diaper bag & provides cover for my SW1911 & a reload quite handily. Also, when you have a chew toy consisting of brightly colored plastic car keys attached to the front of your tac vest & diapers peeking out of one of the back pockets, it kind of provides a starting point for conversation.

Last, I can use the vest to not only practice my draw from concealment, but work on my diaper-changing times. ;)

Wait, she caught you, and let you off?
Dude, you are in so much trouble and you don't even know it yet.

I mentioned I hadn't been to CTD yet, and I swear that my buddy's jaw dropped.

In regards to the differences in the pants...

I believe they started offering or switched the little pocket to the left side when they started marketing them as "Tactical Pants." Prior to their tacital status, they were rock climbing pants. The "man down" strap is actually for carabiners, not dragging your downed buddy out by his rear. :neener: I'm not sure why it's still there on the "Tactical" version, but I know one guy who thinks that it helps keep his OWB holster tighter to his butt. Whatever.

They are now making them out of two different types of fabric. One's a nylon rip-stop type, the other is cotton canvas.

http://www.511tactical.com/

I'm actually wearing my old-school 5.11s right now.

And I'm glad it is. It allows me to say they are rock climbing pants and not "tactical"

All that CTD needs now is a little dressing room. Trying the 5.11's on in the restroom with nothing to hang things on and with people aknocking was and excersize in 'tactical' speed and ballance :) .
