I haven't been able to find any load information for a 230 grain XTP bullet for the Sharps (Standard pressures) .45-70. Anyone got the info?

230 grain! Wow - I think lightest bullet I have seen data for is a 350!!! Actually Accurate shows a 300 in light loads.

Not sure where you'll find data for that light a bullet. I load with 405's and can load those down to trap door levels quite easily if required.

Subject to someone more knowledgeable coming by - I really am not sure you will find a bullet that light - tho sounds like you have an XTP in mind. Is it .458/.459 tho?

Sorry no help.

The bullet is .458 and a friend wants me to reload for him. I've reloaded 300+ grain, but never this light. I scanned several reloading manuals (from powder mans...) but found nothing close :cuss: . The closest was 275 grain but I feel there may be too much of a weight difference to be safe with it. THNX fer the reply tho...

I guess - if he really wants this light (and still puzzled!) - best way is to extrapolate back from existing data for heavier bullets, but chances are when you get this light - a faster powder might be in order.

Dang it - talk him into something else! :p

BTW - quite forgot to say a hearty welcome to you! :)

Yeah, I tried to talk him into 300 grain Hornady JHP, but he wants to use these as "demo" rounds because their less expensive than anything 300+ grains.

Thanx fer the welcome.

does he have a part number for this bullet?

Heck, he has me interested in it....

My brand-spanking new Hornady bullet chart I picked up at the NRA meeting shows all .45 XTPs, including the 230 grain, as .451" The lightest .458" is 300 grains and is not an XTP.

The lightest .458" is 300 grains and is not an XTP. This is what I have been thinking all along. And my Speer chart shows nothing either that light.

Surely this is the common 230 gr XTP that many of us use in our 45 ACPs. If so, definitely a .451". (and accurate too...but not in a 45-70)

I have a conversion insert so I can fire 45acp [ .451"] in my 45-70 [.458"], it isn't accurate!! I think I have seen a bullet [lead ?] of 250 gr for the 45-70 but I can't remember where.

the lightest pill I have EVER seen was for a 292 grain Lyman mould.

You could possibly modify this by putting a plug in centrally where the base is in the mould..make a hollow-base bullet...but why go though all the trouble for a lighweight 458 bullet?

45-70 isn't designed to sling light bullets...IF you need a plinking gun, go get a Ruger 10-22 or somthing...

It sure sounds llike a .451" diameter .45ACP bullet. I just checked the Hornady website and the lightest .458" diameter bullet they show is 300 grains.

I'd be real cautious about loading for someone else no matter how close of a friend they are. It's better to show a friend how to do it themself.

I talked him into it. He picked up Hornady 300gr JHPs. Now if I could only find info for the .45-70 using Winchester powders :banghead: ....

BTW, Thanks fer the beware, Sharp Shooter. This person is my adopted father and I've been reloading rifle for him for years. This is the first year for the .45-70. He does the shotshell, I do rifle/pistol.

Thanx fer the responses...

I share your frustration re powder choice ... but seeing as we are now on the 300 bullets - hey - treat yourself to another powder!!! Many choices but just good ol' Reloader 7 will permit some very safe loads. I haven't tried it but some folks also reckon 2400 will do fine too at lower loadings... (stuff some of that in your mag loads instead of 296!!) :p

The only mag I got is a 300WSM. Love it, loove it! I reload with 760 and have gotten tight groups. 2.5"-3" consistantly at 500 yards. As soon as I get my camera hooked up, I'll get some pics posted.

I submitted a load info request to Winchester for the .45-70 but I think I'll have to go 2400 or 4198. I've requested load info from them before and got directed to that 2 year old manual. I was even suprised to see info for the .300 WSM listed  .

Well, I received a reply and, no shock :fire: , they referred me to the 2 year old Reloading Manual. I replied stating that I feel they should include load info for the ammo they produce and for cals they produce brass for. Doubt it will go anywhere, but...

if you are set on 230 grain why not just cast your own. personally id like to know what a like little bugger like that would do. lol sounds like fun.

I think that I read somewhere that Barnes makes a 250 gr HP for the 45/70. If my memmory is correct that that is possibly the lightest bullet in .458 that is availibly.
