[Route 66]

I've been looking for a HD as well as a plaything shotgun for a while now. I've been reading the posts and decided on a Mossy 590 with parkerized finish and ghost ring sights.

So I went to the Indy 1500 show yesterday but unfortunately couldn't find what I wanted (except one dealer had a ridiculously high priced one I wanted - $489). I was near the end of seeing all the tables when low and behold I saw a 590 A1 with parkerized finish and Hi-Vis front instead of ghost ring.

I talked to the dealer for a while and found out it belonged to a friend of his who needed the money and that it would be a private sale because of that. The more we talked the more he dropped the price and he also threw in a M7 bayonet and scabbard on the deal. It looked little used, there are no scratches or dings on the stock or metal, there are a couple of places where the finsh is a bit marred but nothing noticiable. It came with the original box and manual. So all the above and out the door for $265. Did I do good?

I got my 590 with the ghost ring sight used for $250 several years ago. I had to buy a bayonet later, but got a case, sling and some ammo.

I'd say you did well.

When I bought the 590A1 on Friday I was running short of time to meet my wife. The only thing I saw ammo wise on my way out the door was 2 3/4 S & B 00 Buck, so I got a box to start the BA/UU/R. What do you recommend for HD work (I live in a home with only the wife and I)? What about fun shoot 'em up at water filled jugs, an occasion melon or even paper targets? My daughter and her boyfriend visit occasionally and we sometimes go to the range. She has never fired a SG before so I don't want to scare her off with vicious recoil. Any suggestions with a milder load?

ahadams - It is not for sale at any price (well OK it can be had for a ridiculous dealer price), but for right now my intent is to follow Dave's advice of BA/UU/R. That may even start today, the forecast here is upper 60's!

Any suggestions with a milder load?

it's a pump, it's like Mikley from the Life cereal comerical "It'll eat ANYTHING"!! therefore....

if your Duaghter has never fired a shotgun before get teh lightest recoiling round you can, regardless fo payload. the one that comes to mind is the Winchester AA "low noise Low recoil" aka "featherlite" load. or AA128FL. these rounds are popular with the Cowboy Action set. because they make a light weight coach gun style SxS bearable. they make standard Dove & Quail loads look like heavy payload 3 1/2" mags. in a gun like a 590 they'd probably be like shooting a .22. now they ARE a bit pricey compared to some other loads, but if your looking for soft recoil they are the way to go.


for HD loads, it's still what you feel comfortable with. but for various reasons (including the advice of one friend who's a ER/trauma nurse and one who's a senior LEO and therefore both see what works/has what effect ect.) i personally won't dismiss good ol' Birdshot as a viable load. you ever see what the aftermath of a close range D&Q load hit looks like on an x-ray? some folks who see that image in a regular basis call it "a lead snowstorm" . birdshot has a tedency (at HD ranges) to enter the body through a single large entry (cup style wads actually tend to cause a secondary, shallow, entry wound) and NOT exit, dumping all the energy into the assailant/thief/home invader. the internal trama from one not to mention multiple such shots will most likely stop anyone in their tracks. plus i'd rather have to clean up blood stains that to have to go looking for anything that went through the jerk, and/or patch my walls.

66, the lightest,cheapest loads you can find are what's needed for first firings both of the weapon and the shooter. Look for something like 2 3/4 dram, 1 oz 12 gauge "Field" or "Dove and Quail" loads.

Review the floaters about proper mounting and so on. Take things one little step at a time.

And have fun, folks who have never gotten used to the shotgun have NO idea just how much fun they can be. Water jugs are nice, I suggest being at least 10 yards back. Watermelons are fun too.

Looks good...I am on my way out the door to give my check to my friendly ffl for mine. It was shipped yesterday. I got the A1 with Ghost Ring sights..now I have to figure a way to get the mosssberg heatshield on it....any ideas?

It's not really, necessary, but it is bad-***! Since you don't have ghostring sights, all you have to do is remove the front sight, slide the heatshield on, and put the front sight on.

Since you got the 590 A1 with ghost ring sights you may be out of luck. The manual says you must remove the front sight if it is the bead type and if ghost ring you cannot install the heatshield due to the front sight. I'm not very familiar with heatshields but you may be able to find an after market type that will fit your SG. Good Luck.

I found a thread on the Ar15 board. He got the heatshield on but it's hard and scratched the barrel.
