Wild Hogs Mangling Fields In Texas

Associated Press

Wild hogs are mangling fields and pastures with their razor-sharp tusks. They`re wrecking ecosystems by wallowing in streambeds. They`re even killing and eating smaller animals. In short, the nation`s largest feral hog population is making a mess of Texas.

P95carry, come on down and getcha some of these hawgs. :) They really do multiply faster than rabbits. Wouldn't eat them though, gosh they stink. Bring that Ruger SRH .454 of yours. Should do a number on them. Hopefully I'll get a chance to use mine soon. :(

It's true man. Many people are trying to come up with solutions. In the county where thaat coach got shot two weeks ago they offered a bounty of so much per set of hog ears but they quickly ran out of money.

It's really amazing what a bunch of hogs can do to a flat field overnight.

Not interested in the eating but sure would like some good hunting!

Indeed, the .454 could well get some excercize, tho right now I would be also planning on some ''BFR experiments'' - not to mention some hotter loads thru the Ruger #1.

Oh boy - I wish - I really wish.

So - other prob anyways of course - where to stay etc .. plus it's a long haul. Last time down there was a trip to gun show in Dallas and then on - northbound.

Was it H&H Hunter a while back who bagged about 6 or more in one day? I forget!

There are two million feral pigs in Texas !!! They multiply rapidly and more and more states have them too !

They are everywhere.

You can go into any Dairy Queen or coffee shop in Texas where farmers/ranchers congregate in the mornings to drink coffee, and ask one or all of them if they have any problems with hogs. 99% will probably say yes, and then ask you when you are coming out to their place to kill them :).

Just my .02,

We've got them right here in Fort Worth. On several occasions I have seen one run accross the perimeter road in my neighborhood and every now any then somebody will smash into one. Plays hell on a pickup or car. Unfortunately discharging a firearm in the city limits is a big no no.

My wife saw one in a neighbors back yard and said "Oh look, they have a calf".

Here in WI we have a list of farmers that will allow you to hunt deer on their land for free. I wonder if Texas has something similar?? I would love to come down for a long weekend and shoot a bunch of hogs.

Swing south and pick me up if you go Chris! Haha - would do so with pleasure Dave - only wish it were actually possible. Good hunting and actually helping relieve what appears a massive problem would make a great combination.

You know what? It sounds like to me that we need to put together a trip to help Texas.

Wonder how mixing some Mosin Nagant M38 and plenty of surplus ammo would work on them? I think it would be a great combo to take care of a bunch of them.

Using a bow might be an option for somebody that knows how to use it. Unfortunately that's not me. I'd probably hit a low flying airplane or something.

P-95,

My record in one day with a rifle is 24 hogs.

Yes there is no shortage of these beasts in Texas. As far as them "stinking" yes that is true for the mature boars but the sows and young boars smell like fresh grass on a spring day and make for fine table fare! ;)

Agree. The ones I shot in Georgia made great breakfast sausage amongst other things.

Absolutely. I stuck 2 in Georgia using a bow. Just make sure you have a good climbing tree close by.

Plenty of room in the Bronco. :D

I've only seen them on my place once, but I have neighbors that are covered up with them. We don't grow any grain and they don't eat grass, so if any do come on our place, it's just to cross to a neighbor's wheatfield.

Steve - if only it were all possible - mind you, you are way nearer than me! Given the chance - we could be well equipped with .454 and 45-70 ''tools'' ... for a start! Choices would be yours.

H&H - 24!! :p  Oh my - did I ever remember wrong! That is getting close to a chore, no?!

Oh well - one day - maybe some rancher with a mega problem and loads of $$$$'s could ''employ my services'' ....... including travel cost!

Heck, I'll be there too! That'll give me an excuse to upgrade from that .270 I've got to something bigger. After dealing with javalina at several points during my younger days, I would say my first step would be a remote operated .50 on my truck.....

I, too, would dearly love to go hunting feral hogs. My intent would be to use a .54 muzzle-loader and a S&W 29 (.44 maggie) for backup.

What's necessary to do so? License? Guide? Simple landowner permission? Are there areas of the state better than others? I'd want to eat the dang thing, too. Even ground into sausage works for me. I love pure pork sausage!

Seriously, I want to do this. A brother-in-law would be interested a well.

Someone mentioned Wisconsin. I live in Minnesota, so that would be very convenient for me.

You will need a license and permission to hunt on someone's land. The law just changed, and it may be that if you are acting as the agent of the land owner you can skip getting the license--that should be verified with the Parks & Wildlife folks though.

Or you can find an outfitter that sells hunts. Some are pretty reasonable--some aren't.

Try these guys. www.brushycreekoutfitters.com

Game Wardens frown on folks shooting anything without a license. For out of state folks, those little slips are a bit pricey at $300.00

Folks south of me have more and bigger ones....but I have more than I want.

Smoke,

Being a nonresident hunter in Texas I must take exception with your quote.

A small game yearly non resident license is $150.00 and you can get a 5 day small game licencse which is around $35.00. Either of which are good for hog hunting.

The license price you've mentioned is correct only if you buy the deer tags with it.

I've been to a buddy's ranch in Kerrville, Tx several times to hunt pigs specifically. I have been going to his place for over 20 years. I have seen evidence of pig activity and I've seen captured pigs and dead pigs, but I have never seen one in the field to shoot at. :( (Last year I got a nice Axis buck- with my truck :banghead: ) I am going next week to another friend's lease in Junction, Texas. His brother is coming in from Virginia and we are going to try to take out as many porkies as we can. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I could use some pork loin in my freezer. YUM YUM.

Free pig hunting was easier to find a few years back, before some buyers started paying high prices for export to Japan. If the pig population is rising again that's great, maybe the days of free hunting are coming back.

Lots of Texas ranchers use deer feeders (which seems a little like cheating to me), and the pigs will displace the deer at the feeders - that's one quick way to find them! But pigs are smart, especially the older ones.
